Rude, profiling owner - upon reading reviews, it appears others have had the same experience as well - don’t visit if you don’t want to be profiled by gender/race;
I’ve tried giving this local hardware store a chance on more than one occasion, but after my most recent visit I won’t be returning.
When we first asked for help from the register employee, the owner became dismissive to their own employee, said the employee who would assist is outside and immediately complained that “we don’t listen.” (???) Against my better instinct due to wanting to finish my project this weekend, I remained in the store instead of leaving and the experience got worse.
When we went to the register the same owner then gave the cashier the wrong price - $0.75 per fastener instead of $0.45 per fastener, showing both carelessness and incompetence.
I had to walk back to the aisle and obtained a picture of the correct pricing. While settling up, the cashier mistakenly assumed I was trying to use Apple Pay under their $3 minimum, at which point I informed her that I was setting my phone down to pay with cash. This small misunderstanding would have been no issue - but the way the situation was handled afterward was unacceptable.
As we left, my boyfriend calmly told the owner that his behavior had made him uncomfortable. Instead of listening or showing any professionalism, the owner immediately tried to argue. When a customer expresses discomfort, the last thing a business owner should do is make excuses or get defensive. That is not how you treat paying customers.
What made this experience particularly troubling is that it felt like we were being profiled. All other customers in the store were white-appearing and were not treated or commented toward in this way, while I am white and my boyfriend, who was with me, is visibly Hispanic. All the workers were clearly 50+ years old and white.
This was not my first disappointing experience here. About a year ago, my boyfriend had keys copied at this store and the duplicates were poor quality - they barely worked at all. By comparison, when we later had keys re-cut at Home Depot (non-laser), they worked perfectly without issue.
It’s unfortunate that a local business that could be a helpful resource for the community instead demonstrates poor quality service and unprofessional, dismissive behavior from the very top. We’ll be taking our...
Read moreI have been going to this store for 15 years. I use it many times a month. While this experience shouldn't define the store , I have to write this review as nothing was resolved. The store as everyone knows is a good neighborhood store. Home Depot around the corner and why go there when these guys are always friendly.
I had a nice person helping me and he asked a question over the 2 way radio. I could tell the person was around the corner . I was trying to make it easy and happen to see her replying back to sales rep that was trying to help me. I approached her and said "maybe I can explain what i was looking for" She held up her hand in my face and said" He is helping you" I replied saying I wanted to show you the item, she replied again " He is helping you"
Customer service I have been doing for 35 years now. While this review wont slow down business or closed the store, its a reminder that people have choices when shopping . The lady was so rude I didn't even have a response. I explained it to another person that just said sorry and smiled.
I looked at my records yesterday to see how much I have spent over the past 15 years. I could only see the past 8 years. It was over 91k .
For a local store that that sits in the shadow of Home depot, someday the store will close its doors because of people like this.
While the review will sit in the google cloud and based on the other reviews this is a 1 off, but the way she acted towards me is so unacceptable it needed to be written. Whoever you are in the green shirt, thank you for making me go somewhere else for no reason except because you are RUDE. Being nice costs nothing , being RUDE just...

Had an incredibly disappointing experience at Goodys Hardware Store. As a female customer, I felt that the owner and his register help were inattentive and dismissive.
The man at the register, who seemed to have difficulty seeing properly, lost my original key while copying it. After traveling from two towns over, I called him from a long distance away, only to be told rudely that he had given me the keys. When it sat, he lost it behind the register !! After searching, I found my keys sitting right at his register. This level of unprofessionalism is unacceptable. He was rude and spoke down to me in front of my grandson. please READ Moreover, the owner’s attitude was no better. He was dismissive and seemed unconcerned about my predicament. It felt as though they might have a bias against female customers, given the lack of respect and attention I received. I will never return to Goodys Hardware Store. East haven !! It’s no surprise the business appears to be falling apart given the poor customer service and unkept conditions very dirty I strongly advise others to avoid this place Train your staff properly or give up - close the door...
