Brisa's Nail Salon — Local services in Edison

Well I'm going to add my own glowing review of this place. I needed my nails done yesterday, on Memorial Day, and my regular spot was closed. So I hit Yelp to try to find a spot that was open. I read the great reviews for Brisa's and luckily they were open and were able to accommodate me within the hour. I'm so glad! I LOVED my experience here. I love the clean and peaceful atmosphere and the wonderful service provided by my stylist, Grace, as well as the owners Joe and Maria. Grace gave a wonderful pedicure with a fabulous massage and so far the color gel mani looks great. I really think Brisa's is giving my regular spot a run for their money. They are not as convenient as my regular spot, which is 5 minutes from home, but I think I may have found a new spot. Looking forward to going back for my next appointment at Brisas. That was fun, let's go again!

As a man I don't know that much about the nail salon industry. I started going to Brisa's about 20 weeks ago and would return every second week for a spa manicure and pedicure. I really enjoyed Brisa's as it was my Oasis where I could relax after a stressful two weeks away from the kids and work. Normally I would pay the 80 dollars for the services and then tip 20 dollars on top of that. However for the last two weeks I have been without a job and I have not been able to tip as I normally do. Yesterday I had an appointment with the owner Maria. After I completed my services I paid and tipped about 5 dollars. Within three minutes Maria walked back and handed me my tip back and stated that a spa manicure and pedicure was a big job and if I couldn't tip more she rather I not tip. Not only did she do that but she did it in front of employees and other customers. Needless to say I was really embarrassed and I had to speak to a few of my female friends to find out if 5 dollars was really that much of an insult that Maria felt the need to embarrass me in front of half the salon. Most of my female friends confirmed that they normally tip five dollars and 20 dollars was more than generous (when I could afford it). I won't be returning to Brisa's but I also felt compelled to share my experience. If the owner is willing to treat a loyal customer like that over a measly five dollars I cannot imagine how she would deal with a more demanding customer with more demanding needs. There's good and bad with this place. The Good: Friendly staff, clean salon, affordable prices. The first time I got a pedicure here I loved it. I came back a second time to get my nails done for my birthday. My boyfriend made the appointment but didn't mention I wanted a full set but they were nice enough to squeeze me in between appointments. The Bad: I would've completely understood if I got turned down for the full set, but it was insisted that I could be fit in and it could be done, so I let Yasmin do my nails. They came out absolutely horrible. The nails looked bulky, the French didn't come out straight at all, the shape wasn't what I wanted (and I had a picture). At first the nails were coming along great, but at a point it took a turn for the worst and it went downhill fast. I was so disappointed. I'm giving the tech the benefit of the doubt since I assume she was rushing, but don't say you can do my nails and then rush and leave me walking away with something I didn't ask for. The pedi even chipped later that day too. Thankfully a different tech was able to rush me into her salon the next day and they came out stunning. All in all a decent place, but I wouldn't trust them with a mani or pedi for...
