I'm 64 years old and have ridden my whole life; my first long ride was at 16 when i took a two day trip from western Massachusetts to Hyannis on Cape Cod. I've ridden in Asia, Europe, Africa, as well as locally; in busy cities like Shanghai and London and on carless, people less stretched like the GAP trail. I did not keep track of miles until the last decade - and with my iPhone I now know i do over 3000 miles per year...so I can guess I'm somewhere around 150,000 miles of riding. All this to say I knows the rules of the road and our, cyclists role within those rules and courtesies. On Wednesday night May 22, a large Pedal Power group ride went through Ivoryton. A driver passed the peloton quite safely and signaled to turn right with plenty of warning distance to the riders, and started to make the turn slowly. the lead rider, rather than properly moving to the left or stopping, proceeded to pass the car on the right, nearly causing an accident. Worse, several riders followed the leader around the right of the car. It is my strong opinion that if Pedal Power is to sponsor large group rides it has the duty to insure the "leader" is well trained on what that means, and is aware of his or her duties as far as leading the group safely and following the rules. I can say from this incident - witnesses and commented upon by others outside of the Playhouse and parking area, that Pedal Power has failed in providing safe leadership, at least in tis instance. Do better - this above behavior gives all of us riders a bad name
I find the response remarkably arrogant. I was there, witnessed it all, and if called in to testify if an injury accident occurred, I would blame the lead cyclist. And I am completely a bicyclist advocate. To the respondent - please accept that you can get better, you can be safer, you can be more courteous. Do not...
Read moreFirst ever visit to Pedal Power and I’m a happy camper. Staying at Hammonasset campground and needed a new chain. They told me it would be later in the afternoon before they could get to it because they were in catch up mode. It wasn’t more than an hour before I got a text that the repair was done. Wow! I thought for sure they were going to try to sell me a new bike “I definitely need one” but they just replaced the chain and told me that my bike needs some love. Oh! They also tightened up the rear tire, which was a bit wobbly. Cheap fix and...
Read morePedal Power in Essex is a welcoming, well staffed store. Upon entering, the staff said hello and offered to help if needed without pressure. After browsing, our questions were answered by Kendra, Pete, Todd and Todd. We were buying a new bike for my 12 year old son and they were so kind and talked with him about what kind of bike he wanted/needed, then took the time to let him try a few different styles. I would highly recommend Pedal Power in Essex, the store is small but well stocked, and the staff is informative and friendly to people...
