I was extremely disappointed in their lack of organization of the Free RPG Day event and disrespect toward paying customers who showed up specifically for the advertised event. Despite the news on their site claiming they would have materials for Free RPG day, when I asked a staff member where the event was taking place they knew nothing about it. Many other customers had shown up, some driving several hours from out of state to arrive at the store specifically for the event, only to discover a chaotic mess of people wandering about with no idea what was going on. The owner informed us that the event had taken a back burner role due to the store's involvement in a recent convention; I found the explanation unsatisfactory, as that convention ended a week ago, and how much effort does it take to lay materials out on a table for customers twenty minutes or so before you open your store? When the staff finally got around to laying out the materials it was 45 minutes after the advertised time of the event/store opening. In the mean time the box of free rpg materials had sat on a shelf for 43 of those 45 minutes, unattended to. The staff also expressed surprise at the number of people who showed up for Free RPG day, which in itself is not that upsetting, but the store has a track record of disregarding the local population of RPG gamers, dismissing their existence. Staff members have told me a number of times how tabletop RPG groups aren't that big around here when I have met more RPGers at the local conventions than card gamers and miniature gamers and comic collectors COMBINED (in fact most of said other groups of people were also RPGers).
That's fine if this business does not want to cater to RPG gamers or respect its customers, I will just take my money elsewhere. I encourage you to do so as well. There are alternative shops stocking RPG materials in the area- try Little Big Wars in West Fargo, Barnes & Noble in Fargo, or Grand Cities Games in...
Read moreI've been to some comic book, board game, and tabletop stores that made me feel very unwelcome because I didn't know anything about Magic the Gathering, a specific obscure comic character, and know every rule for a board game. This store couldn't be any further from that. They don't lie their way through a conversation just to get you to buy something. If they haven't played it, read it, painted it, or rolled it, they'll let you know but they'll find someone who has to answer your question. Even the customers will chime in if they have some feed back and it seems appropriate.
On a slow night one of the staff members had some minis that he had been painting. I asked if he had any tips as I was new to painting. He showed me some quick tips and tricks and explained see of the basics (like don't pay to close attention to detail, most of the time the minis are going to be on a table a couple feet away from your eyes. The small mistakes can't be seen at that point.). I appreciated the conversation and it finally motivated me to finish painting...
Read moreParadox Comics is a very professionally run store, and it’s clear they take their business seriously. They’re often quite busy, which speaks to their popularity, but it can also mean the environment feels a bit rushed at times. That said, if you’re in the store and need something specific, the staff usually make an effort to prioritize you and get your needs taken care of efficiently. I mostly deal with trading cards, and from my experience, they’ve always been respectful and straightforward—never felt mistreated during any of my visits, which have been numerous. The store has a very distinct and unique layout that stands out from most other comic or card shops, which I personally like. I can’t speak for the comic book side of things, as I’m strictly there for cards, so others might have a different experience. Overall, while it’s not perfect, it’s a solid place to shop if you value expertise and...
