You are served by friendly people a full home-cooked meal including a filling and delicious main item such as lasagna or shepherd's pie, a side of tasty cooked vegetables, a tossed salad made with baby spinach or mesclun and cherry tomatoes and other crisp veggies, a piece of artisan bread, fresh fruit, and dessert with milk or juice - sometimes real juice like OJ mixed with raspberry - not the usual sugary "bug juice" you had as a kid at summer camp. It's a sit-down meal with a diverse crowd of people who happen to be hungry, including lot of kids, which makes it fun. You might be able to pick up useful information about surviving "off the grid" with resources in and around Flagstaff, ala Bob Wells and the "Nomadland" crowd. You are encouraged to go back for seconds and thirds, all you can eat. Security guards keep everyone safe. Staff and volunteers keep the place spotlessly clean, which is no easy feat, given that they serve about 150 meals between 4:00 and 5:30 PM. Eating supper here did not make me feel like a loser begging for a meal at a "soup kitchen" instead of dumpster-diving. It made me feel okay about turning to this wonderful resource instead of sustaining myself entirely on my usual camp fare of tunafish sandwiches or bean and lentil stew: the meals are HEALTHY and complete, much better than I can do on a tight budget. The camaraderie is nice! It feels good to sit down, fill your belly, and talk to people. Once I've resolved my own socio-economic problems, I'll want to volunteer to help out at Flagstaff...
Read moreHUNGRY? New to Flagstaff, and a little short on money? This is a good and family oriented place to recieve lunch, dinner; and to top it off, they're dinners are hot and ready, with both walk-up and dine-in options available 7 days a week. When my 76 year old Mother and I came to Flagstaff, AZ from Oklahoma, we were out of food and tapped on our finacial situation. Then we found this Community Center, and they had hot meals waiting for us upon arrival. Friendly staff, and a clean dinning area, where you feel welcome and accepted. They went above the call of duty and even offerred all the local resources here, including the steps needed to apply for food & housing assistance. I can really feel at home when people work together for the common good and well-being of one another, especially when they do everything possible to help those people struggling, hungry, or simply less fortunate. That said, I will glady rate this place with 5 stars, as they really help people in need. Thank God in Heaven for honest and friendly people, and for all the staff at The Community Center here on Second Ave, in Flagstaff Arizona. A good deed can go a long ways. God Bless you...
Read moreThis place is amazing! I am currently in a situation where I need assistance and knowing I can get enough food between this place, and The Golden Pantry has elevated a LOT of stress. Some of the stuff you get has gone bad, but you just have to be vigilant and wash your produce and inspect for mold. It happens in regular grocery stores all the time as well.
The volunteers, however, are what makes this place AMAZING! I have never come across anyone even remotely rude, mean, condescending, or anything even hinting at attitude. They are not only polite but they radiate happiness, go get them and you've got this attitude. Most people don't want to have to ask for help to begin with, and it can be kinda hard on the ego to go to these places, so it's very nice not to feel worse doing it. I think to me, the volunteers mean so much more than the service...
