As a former student from the early days of Ben Hyman Music I can say from first-hand experience that Ben is a master teacher. He brings a true passion for music and music education to each lesson that is unparalleled. Under Ben's guidance I broadly expanded my musical repertoire with a transition from acoustic to electric guitar, new styles of playing, and new musical genres. Now, many years later, I am still playing regularly despite my busy schedule as a physician and frequently find myself reverting back to something Ben taught me (when I am not playing wheels on the bus on a loop for my kids)- a rock solo, a bluegrass or jazz instrumental, or improvising with a percussive "slap" technique. In fact it was one of these jazz pieces that gave me the confidence to join a jazz band during medical school and the foundation Ben helped me build that allowed me to independently develop my skills in a less familiar genre. Ben would go out of his way to accommodate schedule changes so that we would not need to miss a lesson. When I was ready for a new piece of equipment (amp, guitar...), Ben would not only provide me with expert recommendations but make sure I was getting the right items for the right price. I have been so impressed with how Ben has grown this business and would have loved to have had the "school of rock" style rock band he has successfully created when I was in high school. He and the instructors he employs are highly accomplished musicians and have collaborated with many big names in the music business. I have recently begun thinking about lessons for my daughter and Ben Hyman Music was the first and only music school I thought of calling....
Read moreI came to know Ben in 2011 through his Annual charity concert. I was a fifth grader and Ben needed a piano player for his concerts since he was strictly giving guitar lessons at the time. While I was able to play through songs and know my basic chords, I was really a beginner with little experience in performance. Over the years, I have been able to watch Ben’s drive cultivate an atmosphere in which young musicians have the opportunity to learn, test, fail, and retest with the best musicians around. I have taken lessons with some of the best jazz pianists, vocal coaches, and guitarists in the world and most importantly, learned how to really love and appreciate everything that music has to offer. Ben wants his students to succeed and provides a tailored experience to every student that he meets. His benefit concerts are an experience unlike any other that have, personally, solidified my relationship with my keyboard and vocals. His teachers are the best of the best and provide an enjoyable, intuitive, first principles approach to understanding music theory and applied music theory.
The most important way to learn is to first learn how to learn. If you understand how something works and why it works, you can figure your way through any problem. In Ben’s program you will learn how to...
Read moreWhen I decided to take up guitar at the age of 40, just the idea of it felt quite daunting. I went through my share of guitar teachers, always frustrated and unimpressed by the lack of professional direction with my lessons. A friend of mine insisted that I reach out to Ben, promising that I would not be disappointed. At our first lesson I noticed right away that things were different. The teaching had a structure and methodology. I could tell from week to week that whatever I was working on was carving a clear path to help me build skills over time. Two years ago I participated in his adult band program where I got to spend time with other newbie musicians and rock out with our professional backup artists. It was truly an amazing experience. I learned a ton and literally had to pinch myself when we got to perform onstage at Mexicali Blues. I highly recommend working with any of the talented teachers at Ben Hyman Music-if you are on the...
