I am writing to formally express my frustration and disappointment following an unpleasant and unprofessional interaction I recently had at Crunch Fitness with District Manager Mike. I have been a member of Crunch Fitness for some time, and up until now, I’ve generally had positive experiences with the gym. However, the way I was treated during my recent visit has left me extremely dissatisfied. To begin, my issue began when I attempted to bring a guest into the gym, as is allowed under your membership policies. I was informed by Mike that in order for my guest to enter, she would need to present identification. While I understand the importance of security and member verification. In an attempt to find a more reasonable solution, I asked if there were any alternatives to presenting ID. At that point, Mike suggested that my guest could simply sign up for a membership instead. However, when we learned that the membership cost was $30 per month, my guest and I decided it was not a financially viable option, as it was far too expensive for a single visit. With this decision in mind, we left the gym to reconsider our options. After some reflection, we returned to Crunch Fitness, presenting my guest identification. I attempted to discuss the situation further, expressing my dissatisfaction with the fact that my membership, which was also priced at $30, seemed to offer fewer benefits for the cost compared to alternatives, and I felt that there might be a less expensive option for my guest to utilize the facility. To my surprise, instead of engaging in a productive discussion or attempting to find a reasonable solution, Mike denied me service entirely, instructing me to leave the gym. His refusal to offer any further assistance or alternatives was deeply frustrating and uncalled for, especially since I was simply seeking clarity on the situation. This was a completely unnecessary escalation, as I had not raised my voice or acted out in any way. As if this treatment wasn’t troubling enough, when I mentioned that I would be contacting HR to file a complaint regarding the incident, Mike proceeded to inform me that I could not do so because he was the district manager and there was no one above him to whom I could escalate the matter. This statement, in itself, was not only dismissive but also completely inaccurate. As a customer, I have every right to bring any concerns to higher authorities, and to have those concerns addressed in a professional and respectful manner. Mike’s assertion that he was unaccountable to anyone else within the company was alarming and completely inappropriate. I left the gym that day feeling belittled, disrespected, and completely frustrated with how the situation had unfolded. Not only was I denied service without cause, but I was also treated with hostility and discourtesy, which left me questioning the values of Crunch Fitness as a whole. I joined Crunch Fitness for its purported focus on creating a welcoming and supportive environment, yet I was made to feel unwelcome and unsupported during this interaction. As a result of this experience and the lack of professionalism I encountered, I have decided to end my membership with Crunch Fitness. I no longer feel that I can support a business that allows its district manager to treat members with such disrespect and discourtesy. In light of this, I would appreciate a formal response to my complaint. I would like to know why I was denied service and why such unnecessary and harsh actions were taken. Furthermore, I request clarification on Mike's statements regarding his authority and the process for filing complaints. As a paying member, I expect to be treated with respect and professionalism, and I am deeply disappointed by the manner in which this situation was handled. I look forward to hearing back from you and expect a prompt and satisfactory resolution to this matter. Thank you for your attention to this...
Read moreUpdate Sept 20th: I’ve added a picture of a cancellation form with my forged signature. The General Manager Marcos requested my cancellation under False pretenses.
He said he politely requested that I stop dancing inappropriately ( Been dancing the same way for years). He didn't even give me chance to comply.
Exhibit A: I've been dancing the same way for years and it's never been an issue. Marcos and Kyle have seen me dance the same way for years.
Exhibit B: I made the mistake and liked the wrong person's social media post. Said person complained. Marcos made a connection between my dancing and my social media activity, implying I was doing something wrong. I'm asked to "tone down" my dancing in front of other gym members. The same way I had been dancing for years with no incident.
Exhibit C: When I as a long time paying member pushed back against the Narrative Marcos tried to paint, he never saw or spoke to me again. Then I get accosted by Kyle and told that If I show up again the police would be called on me.
If anyone understands context, even if I don't have the ability to sue, I'll continue to talk about my experiences at this gym, because no one should have to face the humiliation that I faced at the hands of Marcos and Kyle.
Update Aug29: just checked the status of my account. It’s still active! If I go to this location Kyle said he will call the police. I’m told that I’m banned. I’ve been charged and additional month and will likely get charged again in Sept.
So not only was I targeted for being trans, but now I’m being extorted for money by a gym that said if I show my face again the police will be called. Can someone please help me with this?
Update: I was charged for an additional month Aug. 3rd for a gym that I can’t go to, because the Gym Manager Marcos cancelled and banned me and the other gym manager Kyle threatened to call the police if I show up again. Make this. Nightmare make sense?!?
On July 15th, I was approached by the Front Desk manager and told within earshot of other members that the way I've been working out for years at this gym and other locations is too "provocative" and I was instructed to "tone it down" In this same conversation, I was told that I liked too many social media posts of other gym members, implying that there was a motive beyond supporting other fitness enthusiasts. The manager tried to justify what he was telling me by informing me that the gym was trying to set a family-friendly atmosphere, a statement I find laughable considering the very adult-orientated music that's played in the background, the posting of shirtless pictures in underwear by would-be fitness influencers, and the posting of trainers posing shirtless in front of the mirror.
The following Sunday, I was informed that I was banned, but that I could finish out my month since I was paid up until August 2nd.
In between Jul 15th and now I had been posting about my experiences at this gym, including the latest, and in retaliation I was aggressively approached by an irate-looking man named Kyle yesterday. He said, "We saw your live" I hadn't hosted a LIVE, but posted several videos about my experiences. He told me I no longer had access to their facility and threatened to call the police if I were to step foot in there again.
I believe that I was the target of discrimination, because I'm a transwoman and because I am bold and comfortable in my own body. My presence was only tolerated until the right person or people complained, and because I chose not to dim my light for the comfort of others. If this gym was so family friendly the previous things I mentioned wouldn't have been tolerated, the selective enforcement of social norms and the moving goalpost of etiquette makes it clear that transwomen are only tolerated so long as we don't make a fuss, but most definitely not welcomed in...
Read moreI joined Crunch Fitness on March 12, 2021. On March 13, 2021 I went back in an effort to cancel because I wasn’t sure if I was ready to go back to the gym after being away for so long due to Covid-19. I spoke to a gentleman at the desk and advised that I joined yesterday but wanted to cancel because I had second thoughts. The gentleman stated that I could not cancel and had to wait 90 days. Fast forward to Saturday, June 5, 2021. I checked my account and saw a charge from Crunch Fitness for $85.37. I thought it was for the annual fee, but when I looked over my contract it stated that the annual fee would not be charged until July 2021. I also found that I WAS able to cancel my contract within 3 days of joining, but I was turned away even though I was within this time frame. I called Crunch on June 5th and asked what this $85.37 charge was for. I was told that it did not match any of the club fees, so they were unsure. I then physically went to the club on the same day (June 5) and spoke to a manager who said that he will contact the corporate office on Monday, June 7, 2021 to get clarity on what the charge is. I went home feeling stressed because of the unknown charge, but I had hope because I was given the manager’s word that he will follow up on the next business day. Monday came around and I called the gym back for an update. A young lady answered the phone and advised that the manager that I spoke with would be out until Wednesday and they did not have a corporate office. Again, my stress levels went up. Please be advised that I have a condition that I do not wish to disclose on this site (but I did disclose to Crunch), but I am not supposed to be under any stress because I need to keep my body calm and healthy because it is going through changes and stress can cause negative effects. I went back into Crunch on Monday, June 7 and spoke to a General Manager (or at least that is what I was told). I again asked about the charge that no one knows the source of. I also advised that I wanted to be let out of my contract because I contacted Crunch within 3 days of signing but was lied to and turned away saying that I had to wait 90 days to cancel. By that time, I will have been charged 3 months of fees and the annual fee even. It is not fair that I did my part but was misinformed and lied to. As a result, I am requesting to be released from this contract and have no further charges be applied to my account resulting from this membership. If I would have been let out of my contract on the day that I went back (the very next day after I joined), I would not have been charged this fee and I would not be under so much stress. Not to mention the unknow fee has prevented me from paying other bills and now I have incurred two late fees as a result. Crunch Fitness has stressed me out so much that I cannot even be in that building without my heart beating extremely fast and getting very upset. I have told the manger and other team members what my condition it, but still I have not received a call back to advise where the charge came from, what they plan to do about it, and if they will let me out of my contract due to the lie/ misinformation that I was provided when I tried to cancel within the correct time frame. Again, I want to be let out of this contract, I don’t want anymore fees charged to my account, and I want Crunch Fitness to develop better business practices so that no other members experience the difficulty and stress that I have experienced. They know my condition and they have no acted provided an update on what will be done. This experience leads me to believe that Crunch Fitness does not care about women or women’s health. They simply want to collect fee by any means necessary, even if by debiting unapproved charges from...
