We purchased 2 lights (both floor models), ordered another light and bought a painting at Alex Dee Lighting. The total cost of the items was approximately $900. Upon arrival home, my wife and I decided we did not like the one light we purchased. I responded back to Holmdel (40 minute drive) to return the light and cancel the other one I ordered since it was from the same collection. I spoke to the owner "Howard" who was the one who helped us when we made the purchase. I told him we wanted to return the one light and cancel the other one we ordered. I also told him we would be ordering different lights. He asked if I'd like to order them now and I told him I'd prefer to have my wife present when making a selection. He said that would not be a problem and took back the light and told me he would not place the order for the other one. I told him we'd be back next week to order something different. He asked if it was ok if we could work out the difference when I made the order, since there may be a difference plus or minus.
I returned later that week to order lights. My wife and I had already picked some out from the website. When I returned to the store I returned the painting I had purchased 5 days ago. I ordered the one light and Howard told me I would have a $300+ store credit. I asked for him to put the balance back on my AMEX card and he told me that I couldn't have a refund because I had taken the merchandise out of the store already. I shook my head because I wasn't sure what that meant. Where did he think I was going to take the merchandise I purchased? I placed the one order and left telling him I would discuss with my wife what she wanted to do about ordering another light and the issue with the refund.
My wife called and spoke to Howard a couple days after I ordered the one light. She told him she wanted to use the store credit to purchase another light, but would like the balance (approx. $119) returned to our AMEX. Howard told my wife that he was not refunding the money because he spent too much time with us and we were very difficult. My wife called me at work and informed me of the conversation. I told her I would call him and attempt to rectify the situation. My wife told me that we should accept the store credit because eventually we would need other lights and we both like his inventory. For me, its the principle of the issue. The guy spent about an hour with us while we were in the store. The store was a ghost town the day we were there. One other couple came in during the hour and they were just looking. We spent $900 and he acts like he did us a favor. I know that I can be bad with making decisions when making purchases for the home, especially when there are many things to choose from......but difficult??? I am the most laid back person I know when it comes to shopping. He also lied to my wife on the phone telling her I was "ok" with store credit when I made the 1st return. He told me that we would work out the numbers when I came back, not you can only have store credit. Its a shame the guy feels like he put too much time in showing us some lights and a few catalogs.
Either way, I have no inclination to ever purchase anything from him again. I took my own advice that I give customers when investigating these types of disputes at work. Call your credit card company, make a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, take them to small claims court, and tell anyone who will listen about your bad experience. I have called my credit card company to dispute the $119 difference that I feel is owed to me. I would not waste my time in small claims court for $119, but I will tell everyone I know about the way they do business. He bought $119 worth of bad publicity.
Just be careful of the return policy at this place. At no time while shopping did anyone ever tell me or my wife that we could not return any item. Its not posted anywhere that I...

My wife and I recently had some renovations done in our home and part of that was adding some much needed lighting in several rooms. My mother in law is a loyal customer at Alex Dee and took my wife shopping there to see if she would like anything. Rather than sell her the most expensive fixtures, Howard took the time and made recommendations based on our needs. The lights chosen were magnificent. They are beautiful and make our home feel warm and welcoming. We could not be happier. We purchased some fixtures for our formal living room which were brilliantly recommended by Howard. We have vaulted ceilings and rather than put in high hats he recommended fixtures that are circles and look like high hats but are much more elegant and sharp looking. They are LED and look amazing. We also bought 2 great pendant lights to hang over our bar and 2 chandeliers. One for our dining room and one for our foyer. The foyer chandelier is breathtaking. Everyone that comes into our home and sees it compliments us on the chandelier. They love the lighting throughout the house which I feel makes every room. I highly recommend Howard and Alex Dee Lighting. Why spend a fortune at Home Depot or Lowe's when fixing up your house or even with a contractor, then purchase light fixtures that you had to settle for when you can do it right and spend a couple of extra dollars for lighting that you will be completely happy with for the rest of your life? Read moreMy wife and I have bought several fixtures from Alex Dee, and all our experiences have been equally fantastic. We originally stopped in looking for pendant lighting for our kitchen. Howard and his staff spent a considerable amount of time showing us several options for pendant lighting, and providing helpful information on key things to consider. We ordered three pendant lights lights for our kitchen, along with a bathroom light fixture and absolutely loved them.
After having such a positive experience for our kitchen/bathroom lighting, we came back about a month later to look for a new chandelier and sconces for our dining room. Again, Howard and his staff spent time with us, walking us through sizing that would fit the room and providing several options. We ordered a chandelier and two sconces, along with LED light bulbs.
After putting the chandelier up in the dining room, we realized one of the mini - crystals was missing. We called Howard and he told us to stop in and he would repair the piece, no problem. We stopped in today, he fixed the piece within 5 minutes, and we couldn't be happier.
Such a wonderful customer experience, and a knowledgeable staff that helped make sure we made great choices. Looking forward to having family and friends over so they can see all the new fixtures! ...
