In the past 2 weeks, I achieved two firsts in my life. Writing an online review is a first in my close to 65 years. The second is surfing. In my lifetime, I always dreamed of the sensation of surfing. Living on Long Island, New York, I have tried over the years with no luck. The closest I ever came was, with my son’s help, standing for a second. Isaiah is the reason why I was compelled to write my first online review and the reason I finally achieved my surfing dream. We came to Oahu for our first Hawaiian vacation. While in Hawaii I decided to give surfing one last try. Knowing I needed an instructor, I called the number of the surf shop closest to the hotel. The person who answered said he had an opening. You guess it, it was Isaiah. I guess I should have added a spoiler alert in my first paragraph, Isaiah was able to have me stand up on a surfboard and ride a wave. But that is not why I am writing a review. In addition to being a nice person, Isaiah didn’t just get me to stand, he gave me the full sensation of what it is like to surf. In a short time, he taught me how to read the surf, manage the swim out and most importantly for me was to be one with the board. After my lessons I can honestly say I achieved my dream of truly having the sensation of surfing. When I arrived back in New York I was intrigued as to who Isaiah was, so I googled the name of instructor who help me achieve one of my life’s dreams. It turns out his name is Isaish Moniz. Isaiah Moniz instructs out of his family surf shop, Muniz Family Surf Shop. After seeing pictures and videos of Isaiah surfing, I quickly realized why I was able to achieve the surfing experience I waited for my whole life. Now for my recommendation, I recommend Moniz Family Surf shop for all your surfing needs. Additionally, whether you are a beginner, immediate, advance, or nervous parent looking for a surfing instructor, Isaiah is your guy.

Isaiah is a great instructor and I can’t recommend him enough. I was initially nervous about surfing and being out in the open water but he made the entire experience so amazing and safe. He was very patient and calm, and even before we got in the water he taught me not just how to get on the board and move my body but why. Not many instructors will be patient enough or know enough to explain why you move a certain way and why that’s important. Isaiah explained surfing in a way that let me trust him, shake off my jitters, and let me have fun. And I did have fun! It was amazing!! I was able to get on the board on my first try (I fell off pretty quickly tho) and towards the end of our first 90 minute session I was riding the waves pretty well, at least in my opinion.

Isaiah’s experience and expertise really comes through in the waves he chooses and how he instructs you in the water – his Moniz family pedigree definitely shows. For beginners, I think confidence plays a big part. Some instructors will just get surfers out there on as many waves as possible and watch them drink the ocean time and again. This can be really tiring physically and mentally. Isaiah always waited for the right wave for me. He would explain to me when to go and when and why we should wait. The waves that he did pick were awesome. On my second day, I didn’t even fall off the board and just rode until the wave died down. What a fantastic feeling of accomplishment!

On a final note, I loved that he provides sunrise lessons. I called around to so many instructors and the earliest anyone would start was 8:30am. But Isaiah was available to do lessons at 6:30am just in time for the sunrise over the water and without the crowds that you would see later in the day. It was the most beautiful experience. Just imagine, learning to surf on Waikiki beach with the sun rising over Diamond Head and shining across the waves. How...

I had my very first surfing experience with a private lesson at this school, and I couldn’t be happier that I chose Isaiah as my instructor. Honestly, I was a little nervous at first since I had never tried surfing before, but after just a quick chat with Isaiah, I felt completely at ease and knew I was in good hands.

Isaiah is an outstanding local surfer with such a positive and optimistic vibe—he literally seems to know everyone on the beach and every wave in the ocean! The lesson itself went super smoothly. After just a couple of attempts and helpful corrections from Isaiah, I caught my very first wave. That feeling was unforgettable —I got it!!!

From there, it only got better. We went wave by wave, and I could really feel the difference compared to others who didn’t have the same level of support. After about five successful rides, the only thing slowing me down was my own stamina (all that paddling back out takes effort!).
