For those that have read my book, you will know where my interests lie. I visited this establishment today while passing through Houston on business. I did not get to spend a large amount of time in the store. But enough to review it. This business is one of many that are of the "new generation" of "surplus stores"...which means very little true "army surplus" and a whole lot of newly manufactured commerical copies. Granted the store (with a very decent amount of floor space) is packed full of the "name brands" of commerically manufactured "army gear"...such as Propper, 5.11, Tru-Spec (Atlanco), Condor, Voodoo, Fox, etc. There are rows and bins of newly-made "high speed low drag" MOLLE equipment in all colors and flavors as well as racks upon racks of camouflage clothing...all of which I assume are to appease the "plastic gun" crowd. I did dig through a bin of two dozen or so surplus ALICE belts and actually found three FY1974 dated ones (one was actually unissued)...so my visit was not an entire loss. The token single box of surplus ALICE small arms ammuntion cases only yielded the earliest manufacture of FY1978 (they were left behind). I can only give three stars as, again, there was very little "army surplus". I probably would not go out of my way to re-visit the store, but if I am in the area again I might stop in to pick up some Propper OG BDU trousers (as I can always use more pairs) as the store actually has a decent selection of solid color BDUs. But, if you need a MOLLE magazine pouch in soylent green or a pair of dot-matrix camouflage pants in 8XL...this store...
Read moreI would have given a great review based on the selection however the customer service and phone etiquette of the manager was what led me to cancel my order. I ordered on a Saturday and they confirmed my order Monday. After the 3 business days I emailed to get an update on how long shipping would take and for a tracking number only to find out they didn't even have my items in stock even though the website indicated it did. Several back and fourth calls about what they did have, then to correct what they had just told me after checking their stock. As a new customer I was frustrated that for one had I not sent the email I wonder if they would have even called me or waited a week to contact me, meanwhile I await a shipment that they don't even have. The representative that spoke Spanish was very nice it was once the manager got on the phone she was condescending and her tone was not businesslike when I preceded to explain I shouldn't be charged for shipping on their error. She would try to talk over me and tell me it was the only the 3Rd business day so I decided to cancel the order and told her to reverse the pending charge all while the whole time she is still trying to talk over me. It's a shame I would have been a regular customer and customer service to me comes before price I will pay more for top customer service that simply was not provided here not with the manager or website. They did immediately reverse the pending charge and funds were put back immediately but again it's about customer service and phone etiquette and this woman simply did not...
