Decent place to work out if it wasn't so crowded. The gyms on base are more up to date, cleaner and better organized. Also this gym is FULL of Marines!
I'll starts witht the positives. Free weights go up higher than most serious lifters need. There are a few squat racks and two power lifting planks. The equipment is well maintained and rarely is broken. I took an outstanding yoga class here with Renee. The group fitness classes are much less crowded than the gym floor. The gym is usually clean except when people trash it every Saturday night. There are well stocked paper towel dispensers and spray bottles throughout the gym.
The machines are crammed together DANGEROUSLY. If I try to come to the gym with less than 8 hours of sleep then I risk bumping my head into equipment. Not good for a town that has mant Marines with TBI and PTSD. The equipment is often moved around and is so close together. You have to really be mindful even when the gym is empty at uhhhh 2am. Also that's the only time it isn't crowded.
The music is repetative. The most played song is am emo EDM song about a guy trying to get a girl to put out and lose her virginity on prom night. Annoying song. Annoying gym. Requires noise cancelling headphones but not bluetooth because all the Marines with cheap ass signal jamming headphones the are made by a doctor and rhymes with "eats." Look at the Google Maps busy times and if you see any activity expect a wait on equipment and people walking all over the place.
Lastly, PSA to not go to the gym when you are sick. There are some meatheads that came in here this winter and were coughing their lungs out. Yes I'm talking about you, you tank top wearing, pro-hormone taking Marine that talks to other meatheads more than he lifts then grunts loudly while deadlifting with bad form. Stop overtraining and next time you get sick stay home. Some of us have careers and children and cannot afford...
Read moreThis place is okay IF you plan to never move. Sadly, being apart of the military community that is just part of our life. The last year of our tour at Camp Lejeune my account went month to month (my first year's contract was complete) and Danny (the owner/manager) said that whenever I'm ready to cancel, I just mail in the cancellation certified mail. Fast forward a year later (so now I've been a paying member for over 2 yrs) and we have just PCS'd to VA. A week before we moved (May), we sent our paperwork certified mail to cancel my membership. For some reason, they never signed for our letter and have charged us again for the month of June PLUS a $25 maintenance fee. After an infuriating phone call to their accounts department, we were informed that since they didn't sign for it, basically too bad. Their archaic system for cancellations makes members powerless at the hands of just ONE rude lady whose job it is to check the mail, file cancellations etc. Luckily, we do have our receipt for the certified letter and will not allow this group of shady amateurs to take advantage of us. But if we lost the receipt? I mean, we are in the middle of a move! Who's keeping them accountable when they check their P.O. Box and are told to pick up and sign for letters? I do not trust these people and neither should you.
My main reason for signing up for Gold's Gym Jacksonville was because of their child care. Soon after joining I realized it wasn't all it was cracked up to be- the workers look like they would rather be anywhere else besides there taking care of our children. The kids were not very well supervised and often subjected to PG13 movies- which was crazy seeing as how the majority of the children there are under the age of 4.
If I could go back in time, I would have joined Iron Forged Fitness. They are much more family oriented and truly care about their clients and serving their...
Read moreWent in on 18 Jan 2018 when all the base gyms were closed due to "hazardous weather." Tried using the free day pass as I'm not a frequent Golds Gym goer. Understandably, they did not allow the free pass but instead required a $15 day pass. This is understandable as they need to run a business and they're the only gym open however; upon entering the gym, the only thing that says this is a small fine print sign on a table adjacent to the main desk. This table was being used by other people and therefore could not be seen. Again, no harm no foul.
The thing that made me turn my back and forego a good workout for running in cold weather was the customer service. One of the employees (I believe had dark hair and a peppered beard) ushered me over to the main desk to check me in. As I present my phone to him to show him the email with the free pass (which, again, I did not know they weren't accepting) he says "oh. Great. More reading material. Here. I have some reading material for you, too." Then points at the sign with the fine print that people were blocking, causing me to usher through other patrons just to read.
I asked why he couldn't have just said that vise being a dick about it which is when the other employee stepped in and explained, thoroughly and professionally. I said thanks but with the way the previous employee acted, I'd rather not spend money here.
Customer service goes a long way. It set's a precedence. These guys did not do a good job doing that.
Take your...
