I have found many things for myself, and recommended her shop to others. I also feel confident in expressing my personal views regarding her shop, as well as responding to some of the other comments and posters in general. I mention this only, as I too own a similar high end shop very much like Barb's, mine however is consignment as well. That being said, very few shops meet the needs of all people at all times. The reason she is able to offer her great prices, (and they are) is because she buys them up front and with her money, thus is able to get them for less money herself. The person selling them of course does not get top dollar, they also do not have to pay for an advertisement, be constantly available to show them to people, have strangers come to their homes, have a garage sale, (where you can really expect to make nothing on clothing), and in general expend your time, money, and energy to try to make the money yourself. What you do get is a bit less money, immediately! Additionally, you get a shop, as mentioned previously that offers great things at even greater prices. She on the other hand, has taken a chance by paying for something upfront, that may or may not sell, in a timely manner. Remember, it has to sell quickly, for her to profit, as she has limited space, and the need to always be putting new things out. Additionally, she has all the expenses of any other business, rent, utilities, employee help as required, upkeep, advertising etc., as well as the value of her own time. Yes, consignment will make you more, however, as with all things it too has pros and cons, primarily, no money is made until your item sells, and that amount directly relates to how long it takes to sell it. Most people find our shops will meet their needs at some time in their lives. Perhaps you would like to make a little bit off of lovely clothing you are not using, it can be weight gain or loss, a change in plans that you bought special clothing for, a gift that just wasn't you, or something you just find does not not look or feel the way you would like on you anymore. Voila! here we are, a possible solution.
Regarding, other store issues, as an example, children disrespectful of merchandise each situation is different, some feel no matter, these are just used clothes, however unintended, sticky candy fingers, spilled drinks, smudges, or shoes broken down when small feet try to walk in grown up shoes, all result in no profit. As an owner, I know there have been times when my bad day has resulted in the next customer not being treated as well as they should have been. That is completely on me, and I certainly apologise to anyone if that has been the case. I have not even touched on shoplifters or the wear and tear and damage that can be caused by trying on clothing just for fun, I would hope they are obvious.
Let me get off my soapbox and end this by saying, I know I certainly appreciate all my customers and I think I can speak for Barb, that she does too. Let's all take into consideration our own flaws, strive for a bit more understanding and tolerance of each other, and we will all be better for it.
Meanwhile, if if you've never been there, or its been awhile, check it out! A great...
Read moreThe owner is very oddly paranoid of her customers. She seems to think everyone is out to steal her USED clothing. There is no reason to demand that your customers leave their personal belongings at the counter. She will treat you like a criminal when it comes to the worn out second hand items she posesses. If you wanted to be talked down to and treated like a thief this is the thrift store for you! Let’s not forget the outrageous prices considering she only shells out maybe 10-15 bucks for everything she owns. Almost an 80% markup and very poor customer service. Can not wait for the day that this awful woman goes out of business, which at this rate...
