I visited this past Sunday on a vacation on ascension Sunday. The priest is clearly very orthodox. The homily was outstanding. Maybe the best ascension homily I’ve heard in person. He seems young, so if I had to guess, I’d say he’s probably new there. And he’s definitely in a very tough position either way. These parishioners likely have a way of doing things that they’ve been doing for a while. And despite best intentions, they probably don’t know any better. That’s how they grew up. Aside from the orthodoxy of the priest it wasn’t conducive to reverence and worship. The liturgy… was almost as bad as they come. There’s some random little additions that have never been a part of the liturgy seemingly taken from Protestantism where they took the kids into another room for readings. They did a whole ceremony of blessings for graduates at one point, and then for someone leaving at the beginning. Then they gave a round of applause after one of the hymns. As sweet and nice as these might be for those people, it has absolutely no place in the liturgy. Those things are great in any other context. But the Mass is for offering sacrifices. It’s not about us. I’m glad the priest seems like a good one. But he’s obviously not from the US. And it’s bad liturgies and female led parishes like these that force US parishes to require priests from overseas. Rarely does a little boy aspire to be a priest when there’s nothing that seems special about the liturgy. Yes, Christ is always present. But you wouldn’t know it based on anything in the liturgy. It just looks like a typical Protestant service. There’s nothing mystical or awe inspiring. There’s nothing unique about being a man and doing it because women are so involved. And for some reason, when women get involved in any role, the amount of men decrease. It’s just natural. So no wonder why young men aren’t aspiring to the priesthood. This priest is in a tough position. My priest was in the same position. But it can be done. My parish went from this to being a very reverent NO parish. There’s alter rails, everyone kneels to receive, there’s Latin sprinkled in, ad orientum, and plenty of insence. At first, people started to leave (mostly boomers that think protestantized mass is tradition), but then more people started coming. You can hardly find a seat. It was mostly old people, now there’s tons of young people. And when I talk to the parishioners that stayed for the changes, none of them miss the Protestantized Mass. They feel like they were robbed of their tradition and the beauty of the Mass. Most of them had no idea what they were missing and didn’t know there was something off. It’s all they knew. It can happen at this parish too. My priest didn’t do it all at once, it was one baby step at a time, first a few Latin hymns here and there, then some incense, then alter rails, and then ad orientum. If you’re a Catholic reading this, especially from the baby boomer generation, think about it. Why is it that your kids left the faith, or if not yours, so many of your generations children? Why is there such a struggle to find priests (and nuns)? Why is it that so many Catholics of this generation are only Catholic on Sunday? I don’t think it’s because the liturgy wasn’t enough like the world, or like any other Protestant service. I think it’s the opposite. I think it’s likely more closely related to the fact that the liturgies rarely appear to be...
Read moreIt's ok if a Mass but if you prefer a traditional Catholic Church this is not it. Female servers. Priest was nice about the Eucharist on the tongue but not so Friendly as I was leaving saying negativity about traditional Masses. The members were not very friendly to strangers at Mass in my observation.
Now as a positive note ...the Music was very good and respectful. Beautiful singing. The location in Kimberling City was beautiful and there is a St Jude Shrine on grounds as well as the stations...
