I’m giving you an honest review, because if Dojo Kyle caught your interest, then I want you to be well informed.
What is taught at Dojo Kyle:
JIU JITSU and JUDO.
First off, the instructors are very knowledgeable in the arts they teach. They are constantly striving to provide new techniques, submissions, takedowns, positional changes etc..., but will also go over basics.
Bruce lee once said “ I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick a thousand times.
Continuing on,
The environment is calm and the teaching of all instructors is easy to grasp. After they demonstrate a move, you practice the move with a partner who is relatively your size.
Pros: if you have have questions on the technique shown, they will walk you through it, demonstrate it on your training partner, or even have you work through the technique through them.
Cons: None.
After the techniques of the day have been ran through, and everyone feels that they have the techniques down, then open mat begins.
Prior to open mat, we all line up and shake hands. This is a great way to learn everyone’s name.
Open mat breakdown: during open mat, whether in Gii or regular training clothes, nothing changes. You pick a training partner and roll “Sparring” from 3-7 minutes depending.
Pros: Dangerous competition banned techniques are NOT allowed. Horseplay and grudge fights are NOT tolerated.
Instructors will spar with you and you can choose to go over techniques with them, or even something you saw on the internet.(related to the art)
Since I’ve been training here(over a year), no one has ever intentionally hurt someone else.
Cons to ANY martial art, combative system, self defense arts, is the risk of injury. Injuries can happen. But the risk of injury is substantially decreased if you train hard enough to feel comfortable out on the streets with what you’ve learned or in the completion setting. BUT not to the point to where you hurt someone else or yourself.
Sanitation: Dojo Kyle cares about your health and routinely has the mats disinfected by a 3rd party sanitation.
Final thoughts:
What makes this place stand out is the fact that the instructors are so involved with each individual person and will personally get to know and train with you one on one.
I have never not had a question answered or a technique shown. This place is just flat out awesome. These are my friends and martial art family, this is a home away from home.
Looks forward to training...
Read moreTDLR- almost 6 years at Dojo Kyle for my son and I, and our lives are immeasurably better for it. Great culture, great technique, solid training partners!
I decided to update this since I reviewed Dojo Kyle after being fairly new 5 years ago! If you are looking for a great place to learn high quality BJJ in a great environment, I highly recommend Dojo Kyle. My 13 year old son's life has been so much better from training and so have I. I will address both: He has been at Dojo Kyle since he was 8! And now trains with adults. My son has ADHD like me and some places really just don't know how to deal with a kid like that. Dojo Kyle does and it has been great. An example of why is that for most of the class the kids are moving. They get instruction, then they practice. Almost no waiting in lines... and when he did get out of line, they handled it in a professional way, redirecting his attention rather than scolding. There is discipline when needed - but I have never seen them yell at the kids or anything like that which makes it a positive environment for the kids. The self confidence my son gained over the years has been amazing and watching his passion grow has been awesome. For me, I have a high stress job, 3 kids, too many pets... and I am a vet with combat PTSD. When I walk into the dojo sometimes I have all of the days stress, worry, and anxiety. By the time I walk out, I feel like a new person. I am a better dad, better husband, and I honestly believe it helps me be better at my job. The coaches make sure we have a positive environment and a culture where we are here to learn. It is a mix of all ages and abilities. I do not honestly know of anyone I train with that has a bad attitude or anything like that. It is just a great...
Read moreOh, my gosh! Where do I start?! Our journey together began when my oldest son was 5 years old, 8 years ago. He first trained with Coach Ryan, during an after school program. It was our first experience with jiu jitsu in any form. Coach Ryan is perfect for igniting a love for jiu jitsu.
Later, we continued training on-site at Dojo Kyle. We were then able to train with Coach Ryan, Coach Will and Coach Ellen. There could be NO better embodiments of patience, support, kindness and dedication. They are all beyond amazing. We love them!
As student attendance continued to grow, we met new coaches with the same positive commitments to help guide in training. Coach Raz and Coach Ray are the best!
Over the years, all 3 of my children have gotten to train together at Dojo Kyle and loved it. I loved it, too! Dojo Kyle maintains a sense of community, which truly feels like family. We’ll hold happy memories of our time at Dojo Kyle forever. If we weren’t 1.5 hours away, we would still be training today!
It’s a wonderful piece of mind to feel comfort in the knowledge that your child is learning self-awareness, confidence, responsibility and respect in a safe, supportive, compassionate and considerate environment. I can recommend no better place than Dojo Kyle!...
