In entering an agreement for services, Chicago Computer Land says their staff will contact with updates within 24-48 hours. They do not do this consistently.
At 50 hours, I had not heard from their staff and I contacted them. The technician who answered said they had to do "further diagnostics." At 96 hours, I contacted them again and was told that they had diagnosed the issue at that point but had yet to find a solution.
At 99 hours, a technician called and quoted a $299 repair ($190 for parts, $109 for labor). The root issue was still not addressed and now they were citing other problems that had not existed before they opened the laptop.
I disputed the full diagnostic charge due to the technicians not meeting the service agreement - I offered to pay a portion for labor but not the full amount as they had not met the agreement. I was repeatedly given conflicting information by both the technician and the cited manager that I called. Eventually, they accepted the reduced payment.
While waiting in the lobby, another customer who had overhead my conversation with the manager noted that he repeatedly experiences the same poor communication with their work on his personal and professional accounts.
UPDATE: To address defensive comments made by staff in response to this review:
*The laptop was opened one time before coming to them for solely diagnostic purposes. When the staff member discussed the superglue, he noted that the glue was very old. Thus, because nothing was done other than test the flow of power, no damage or gluing was done on my part.
*The root issue was a power jack issue. This was very clear. Their staff could not diagnose this correctly and instead did damage that they then quoted a $300 repair for. They could not accurately diagnose a basic issue, the repair they proposed still would not address the root issue, thus it still would require MORE work after the $300 repair that they created the need for.
*The only reason there was communication still after the time frame they quoted passed is because I called them.
*Here are examples of the conflicting information: *The staff member said the diagnostics were completed Friday morning; he also said that they weren't complete on Saturday which is why I had no contact. *The staff member said that the company emailed me on Friday morning when the diagnostics completed; after I asked for evidence of this as I received the initial email but no emails since, he apologized for a likely system error that had resulted in no email sent to me. *The manager said over the phone that no resolution could be made by phone as he needed to come in person to assess the issue; shortly after in the same conversation, the manager offered a discount as a resolution. He then later called (still not having come in person like he said was necessary) and accepted my resolution. *I do not know the person they name nor has anyone written a review on my behalf.

Read moreOkay to be transparent, this review is one I posted on Yelp 5 years ago. But I was a broke student so still kinda salty. I added this update to Yelp just now: “I don't use Yelp as much as Google reviews anymore. Was going through my old reviews and forgot how funny this guy's reply was. Definitely edited the numbers quoted by Dell. Lol why would they have quoted the motherboard being more expensive than a brand new version of that laptop. This place stinks”. He replied to me on Yelp with a copied and pasted transcript from Dell. I’m sure it was copied and pasted and untouched lol.
If anyone is on the fence, I can find the receipts from Dell in my old emails to show you.
Original review: “I brought my laptop in about a couple of months ago for repairs since it wasn’t charging. They had me drop it off for the diagnostics test. They told me it was a motherboard issue and not just the charging port. I allowed them to fix the charging port, but said I would figure out whether or not to replace the motherboard since it is quite expensive. I had to call quite a few times for updates and was told it would take time to change so wait for their call. However, I never got a call so I called back and he said that he told me it was ready to pick up already. Okay, that was a lie.
When I came in to pick it up, he explained everything they tried which was nice. As I was leaving, I realized half my AC adapter was some secondhand cable and asked for my original back. He went back and forth and grabbed me 3-4 different cords which did not match. Instead of apologizing, he just said that they do the same thing. I get that, but come on.. it’s common practice to not lose original items.
I ended up contacting Dell directly to have the motherboard replaced for much less than I was quoted here. When the on-site repair guy got to working on my laptop, he told me that the parts seemed all over the place as if the person putting them back had no clue what they were doing. On top of that, screws were put in wrong holes and many screws are missing. It sounds like a small issue, but the case sometimes pops open when I open or close the lid and that sucks. Having a 4 star-rating isn’t everything and I regret paying so much money to have to fix issues they created when they’re supposed to...
Read moreWouldn't recommend to my worst enemy. Dropped my laptop off for a screen repair over a month and two weeks ago. (Mind you im in nursing school with care plans due every week and the only reason i came to him was because he had a faster expected turn around time than asurion who quoted me $300) He Has very poor communication, never calls to update you on anything. Every-time i called during the time period he had it he stated he was working on it and would give a call back (he never did). Today i decided lets just go up there and pick it up ( because again Im in nursing school with care plans every week and now im behind. Plus the fact if i dont do my care plans it could set me behind 4,000 for failing the semester in my clinical portion). When i arrived laptop was ready (he never called to say this) but instead of the quoted $455 which i placed to the side prior (as i am a college student) he states it will be $485 with taxes of course.I asked him was he planning to give a discount considering this 3 day job turned into almost two months he takes off $20 (which still brings it to $465 instead of the quoted $455)then states if i dont pay via zelle however it will still be $485! I get two blocks away after paying and the screen on the laptop is lifting on the sides!! I go back and he states oh sorry didnt put enough tape…did i mention my laptop was touch screen before bringing now its not because in the midst of him having it the cord for the touch screen doesnt clamp right ! (Which you would think you would call and tell someone hey i can fix it but your touch screen wont work before fixing so they can decide if they want to proceed ) waste of time..money…and hope. So much for supporting a...
