Michael K. Jewelers — Local services in Los Angeles

This is a belated review of our experience at the shop, because we are new to online review.

Our experience back a few years ago at the shop was not great. My husband and I went to Michael K Jewelers for a simple custom designed ring. It was not only overpriced, as we later found out, but also the process of working with the owner on getting the ring was unpleasant at times. When he first gave us the quote (around 3K, quite a bit beyond the 2K budget we told him) on the ring, he would not give the breakdown on how the different components of ring and service were charged. He also insisted on us paying the full price right away, rather than the more typical deposit or partial payment before the actual design stage. The owner may dispute that he never asks customers for full payment before the design, as he claimed in response to our google review, but we have receipt indicating otherwise.

When the ring arrived, after over a month of wait, it was quite bulky and unappealing. We asked for the bandwidth of the ring to be refined; after another month of wait, the adjusted product arrived but was even worse. The two accent stones were misaligned and the bandwidth became unevenly thin (about 1mm in one section). The owner insisted that the bandwidth was standard, after checking on the widest section of the band. To his credit, he did reluctantly agree to adjust the poorly aligned stones.

It was our first time getting a custom ring; in retrospect, the owner probably took advantage of our inexperience. The platinum setting around the stones also started to be chipped away in a year or two, and we had to return to the store to get it fixed with an additonal $200. Both service and quality are poor. Won't recommend this store for new buyers or for special occasions, particularly not for custom...

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I needed to have my engagement ring resized because it was way too loose and I wanted it to stay put in my wedding photos... and as I usually do, I waited until the last minute to get it done a week before my wedding. I called Michael and he told me he could have it done within the week, no problem. I brought the ring in to his shop, he was an incredibly nice person in general, which is always refreshing in Los Angeles, and he quoted me a price that was more than reasonable and let me know he could have the ring resized within a week, as I hoped. I got a call from him that it was ready, and not only was it ready almost 4 days earlier than he originally promised, but it fit perfectly, was sparkling clean and looking like brand new. Michael at Michael K Jewelers went above and beyond to help me. I was very indecisive about what I really wanted when shopping for my own wedding band, and Michael helped me through the process. He cared more about me being comfortable than just selling a ring. He really cares about his customers, which is rare in this day and age.
