Let me write this review while the epic taste of those delicious balls still lingers on my tongue….. House of Meatballs is the latest restaurant to appear in Westwood’s infamously every-changing dining scene. Its conveniently located walking distance to my job so kudos but if you’re driving there’s meter parking along the street (also theirs a garage that’s free for 2hrs off Broxton one block east). HOM is super cute on the inside with really unique menus. Their menus are laminated which allows guests to write on and customize their order any way they want it. You can get your meat balls 3 ways; 1 a la carte with some sauce and garlic bread, 2 with pasta or 3 on a sandwich. I certainly wanted to try their vegan meatball called “Popeye” that’s made with spinach, tofu and almonds so I got a single meat ball for 2.50 which came with a sauce of your choice, I got the spicy mama which was a spicy marinara with cherry tomatoes, onions and pepperoncino. The meatball was AMAZEBALLS. It didn’t have the firm texture of a “meat”ball but it was still packed with epic flavors that really made you want more!
I also decided to get the special of the week which was a barbeque chicken meatball with a sweet potatoes mash (I substituted for mash potatoes), fried onions and cornbread. This dish was MIND BLOWING, panty dripping, goodness! I am a huge fan of barbeque sauce and it complimented the entire dish so well. It was such a hearty and flavorful meal. The chicken meatball was thick and had the consistency of ground chicken and shredded chicken rolled into one. The mash potatoes were fluffy and well proportioned. The corn bread was a bit dry but sweet and not even necessary since the meatballs and mash filled me up so generously…
The service was friendly and very helpful to us newbies. The entire menu looked amazing so I know I will certainly be back. The price point was reasonable for the food and quality. And this place is perfect for a sit down lunch with coworkers/friends. Food was served fast and it was super easy to split the bill.
Overall I am a fan and hope they will stay in Westwood for...
Read moreThe House of Meatballs is a quaint and cozy restaurant that is always packed when I passed by it. I was seated very quickly and the server was quite attentive up until I ordered my food. My caprese came after about 10 minutes and it was fresh and a great starter to get your appetite going.
However, that was where I was left hanging. I waited for about 50 minutes for my Chicken Alfredo, watching a few parties who came after me receive their orders first. I understand that they were busy but it was kind of ridiculous how long I had to wait for a party of 1. To the credit of the server, he did let me know he will check on my order about 30 minutes in, however, there was another 15 minute gap before I asked the server 2 more times about my order. When the Alfredo came, it looked very appetizing and was nice and hot. Unfortunately, this plate was only asthetically pleasing as the chicken was chewy and rubbery while the noodles were slightly undercooked. The alfredo sauce was pretty standard and could use a tad bit more garlic.
I wanted to like this place so badly but I just can't recommend the House of Meatballs. The prices are okay for LA standards but the food is simply not worth both the price and the wait. Will this restaurant satisfy your pasta craving? Sure, but not anymore than an...
Read moreSecond time at HoM and it was just as good of an experience as our first time. First time, we had a blast at the bar. This time we reserved a table and lucked out having a table right by the front windows making for a good time of people watching. Our table for 3 was clean and ready for us. Our waiter, Jeanet, was fantastic, as was the gentleman who cleared our table. Jeanet helped us decide between a couple of items on our custom pasta dishes and took good care of us.
We started with a shared ceasar salad that wasn't drenched in dressing, which we appreciated. Right when we were finishing up the salad, our main entrees arrived. Perfect timing. We got gnocchi with white sauce, mushrooms, and chicken meatballs and rigatoni with creamy tomato sauce, bell peppers, and chicken meatballs. Our meals were hot and exactly what we ordered. The gnocchi in the white sauce deliciously melted in our mouths. I'm a total Stan for the creamy tomato sauce. It's the best. Only good things to say about the food, but neither of us knows anything about pasta and what it should taste like.
The wine pours after the first glass were quite generous. They gave me the option of having me beer poured or in the bottle. It's a small place which means it's easy for it to get loud and noisy, but the food...
