I had a pretty good experience with Sunset Nursery, though I never ran into what has comically been described as a fat, mustachioed man (there's a number of cartoon figures that come to mind with this description).
The service I got was actually really helpful, as I've never built a garden from scratch before and didn't know what plants would grow in a southward facing apartment. They gave me good pointers and steered me away from some bad investments, seeing as I have specific needs being in an apartment and loving to cook.
I ended up paying like $15 for 8 or so herbs (and one strawberry plant), most of which were in pretty good condition when bought and have done ever better since being potted only a week ago (I'm starting to see strawberries poke their hairy noses out). And not a mustache in sight, lucky me I guess.
Edit: a few weeks later I noticed I had aphids on my thyme and basil plants. I chopped them and rinsed them, no problem. Went back to buy more. A few weeks later, more aphids.
I understand that's part of buying partly grown produce/herbs is that you may have to deal with a few pests, but literally every plant I've gotten from here has either has a blatant infestation or a submerged one. Just make sure to check each plant before a purchase and don't get too attached when you start to see it wilt.
Still, the store is great for growing merch and paraphernalia, and everybody is...
Read moreDO NOT SHOP HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE ENDANGERED MONARCH BUTTERFLY MIGRATION!
Rude rude rude employees who couldn't give a darn about their customers or doing the right thing to protect the at risk Monarch butterfly.
This store sells milkweeds they advertise as pesticide free that are full of pesticides, which resulted in the death of many caterpillars.
Their rude employees didn't care, a number of them lied about being the manager and refused to get one.
Do not buy milkweed here! They are full of pesticide and will kill any caterpillars you have, as well as prevent butterflies from laying eggs on them and will likely kill any butterfly or pollinator who drinks their nectar.
The man who is a frequent cashier, who is often seen leaning his morbidly obese body against the counter, answered the phone and told he me was the manager and their milkweeds have been teeming with caterpillars. These are both lies, I've been checking their milkweed plants for a few months and every time of the last 6 times I've been here not a single caterpillar, bite mark, or eggs that I could find.
How could someone trust this guy for good gardening advice when he's more than happy to lie and be the one of the surliest non-governmental employees I've ever met.
Beware this dangerous toxic store!!!
Also bad parking. Don't park...

They asked great questions I didn’t even think of. We would have purchased wrong climbing plant that would have eventually break-out of our 4 expensive custom built hanging planters (next time we’ll purchase 4 of the larger redwood boxes from you instead of building them ourselves & save $$ and time, then custom fit them to hang on our walls. On 8/27/2020: We Purchased more soil, plus: four, 5ft jasmine vines (to make a hedge fence as seen in photo), 8 flowering plants, 2 redwood boxes below the Jasmine and monthly fertilizer. We are so grateful we bought from Sunset Blvd Nursery and not from a big box store like Home Depot or Wal-Mart, their incapable of the knowledgeable customer service and the amazing array of plants and supply that Sunset Blvd Nursery has. They will always be our one stop shop when it comes to gardening, it’s supplies or needing garden advice. Much respect & thanks to all those at Sunset Nursery: see you all again soon for the next phase after I save up more $$$!...
