This review is a little late but well overdue, especially after reading some of the other reviews. I visited the Mahogany Salon twice. My first visit was last summer around April. My appointment was for a trim with Patrice. Prior to arriving I had washed and blow dried my natural hair. I just wanted to get in and out. (I've had my fair share of natural hair horror stories at previous salons). Patrice arrived a little late but I remained cool about it. She confirmed what I was getting done and I told her what I had already did to my hair prior to arriving. She asked if she could wet my hair and re-blow dry it. I was very hesitant at first since I don't use a lot of heat on my hair. I went ahead and let her do what she needed to do (now that I look back I realize that was unnecessary).
Patrice was very ruff with my hair when she was blow drying it and she didn't even bother to detangle my hair prior to doing so. When dealing with natural afro-textured hair you have to be gentle and you have to work in sections when you are blow drying or detangling the hair. The trim she gave me was ok. I should have stopped there but I wanted to wear my hair in a protective style for the summer. Patrice informed me that she knew how to do a variety of different braid extension styles. She suggested that I try crochet braids, which I had never gotten done before. So I made my next appointment with her for the following month.
The next appointment with Patrice I let her do the whole shampoo, condition, and steam treatment before braiding my hair. Why oh why did I do that?!?! She was very stingy with the products (Specifically the shampoo and conditioner). She only shampooed my hair once and put very little conditioner on my hair. My hair wasn't dirty but it needed a nice thorough wash with the protective style I was getting. She blew my hair out again with little to no heat protectant. She was very ruff with cornrowing my hair and the entire crocheting process. After almost 2 months of wearing the crochet braids I removed them and noticed that I had some breakage in my crown area.
Overall I take good care of my hair. I do the minimum when it comes to styles, which is braiding it in plaits or twists. From time to time my mother will put it in two French braids for me. The only time I look for a hair stylist is when I need a trim and I haven't been successful at finding a good stylist since I've been natural. I just don't like too many hands in my head, especially if someone doesn't know what they are doing. I'm overdue for a trim and I'm in search for a good stylist. Eventually I would like to do different things with my natural hair but the health of it comes first. If I could just find a stylist who is knowledgeable about the health and care of African American natural hair as well as having the creative skills. I'm at the point to where I might go out of town to find a...
Read moreI have gone back and forth about writing this review. But I'm very disappointed about my hair. This has been over a month ago. Went in for a stream treatment and trim. Had not had a trim for sometime. Was told my hair would need to be blown out in order to trim it. I have been really concern about my natural hair. I had completely been staying away from heat. So the young lady Ms. Natasha tells me she has to part my hair down the middle because my hair is in layers. Never has anyone parted my hair down the middle to trim it. My hair was not cut in layers. My hair was cut and not trimmed. And it's so uneven. The very worse trim I ever had. She showed me what she would have to take off. Seem to start off ok. I was trying to see what she was during kept telling me to hold my head down and said when she got to the other side of my hair which was my thicker fuller side. You don't like a lot of heat. So I don't believe she blew it out enough to see the true length. It's the worse. Shorter than the other size and even more uneven. And people wonder why you go so long without a trim. It's truly a mess. I have had trims when I felt too much was taken off. But not uneven. And it seems to grow back quickly. I don't have much hope for this. I got it braided, kept it braided for about 3 weeks. And planning to get it braided again soon due to I'm not use to my hair being this short. And I hate that it's so uneven. Ms.Regina you were going out of town. But I talked with you before you left and you said she would do fine trimming my hair. She done a terrible job trimming my hair. I cancel the appointment. And kept calling to say I wanted to keep it. That was a mistake. You seem to be confident that she knows what she's doing. I would be careful recommending her. I won't...
Read moreI recently got my hair done here. I had gotten my hair done previously in the past and had an excellent experience when the old management was there. To get to the point a stylist named Patrice did my hair. I asked for a blow out and trim. I explained to her that i had a big chop 6 months ago because of heat damage and to handle my hair with care. When I got to the shop she was doing someone else's hair first of all, secondly she washed conditioned and placed me under the steamer and forgot about me! She said 20 minutes and it turned into 1 hour...I was pissed...I had to come up to the front so she could finish my hair. When I came up to the front she did a rushed half a@@ed job on my hair. She blew dry my hair with out barely putting any protective cream or moisture on my hair. She she preceded to blow dry and trim my hair rushing through it because she was doing someone else's hair. The other woman looked pissed the whole time she was doing my hair because in my opinion she probably thought she wasn't expecting anyone else during her appointment time and neither did I! Bottom line I got a rushed, poor and terrible experience.... the trim was raggedy.........I still ended up with HEAT DAMAGE!! I blame myself partially for this experience however when you get your hair done you expect a trained stylist that listens to your concerns and tailors your experience based on such....Do not let I repeat do not let Patrice handle your natural hair. Maybe for other styles but not your...
