Hands down the best hobby shop around. I live about 45 minutes to 1 hour away in New Jersey and back in November of 2019 I was on the hunt for an MTH Premier Santa Fe Blue Goose Hudson steam locomotive that was released back in 2011. I was told about Trains & Lanes by a good friend of mine who had bought O gauge trains from them and after looking them up right here on Google and scrolling through photos I noticed they had that engine sitting in the case. I called and they said that they still had it. I drove with him to go purchase it and I was blown away by the amount of O gauge trains they have for sale. Greg and the model train crew were very helpful and knowledgeable. Greg even gave me a good discount off the engine. Since that day I have been coming back. I have also bought many freight cars from them. The selection they have on their scale Lionel freight cars is incredible. Most train/hobby shops I've patronized don't have no where near as much inventory as these guy's do. This place is not only heaven or paradise for model train enthusiasts but also for people who love and enjoy RC cars, boats, model kits, etc. This place is 100% well worth driving from New Jersey and sitting in rush hour traffic on Interstate 78 for. The owner prefers to be rather old school and not promote advertisement, rather use the solid and good reputation he has made for people to find out about this place and keep coming back again and again. This place is out...
Read moreMy Father is the dedicated Trains & Lanes customer, I don't usually go there because I never had the need until now. I needed some Airbrush parts and a new brush too because what I do involves a lot of spraying, model making, sculpting, foam carving, mold making, etc. So I called first and the guy on the phone was extremely helpful and courteous, not only did they take the time out to look up everything in the system that I needed with 20 minutes to quitting time on the clock and from the sound of it a shop full of customers there in a hurry to get what they want, but said he could order it and have it there within a week or less for pickup! That's service with a smile and for me that is a godsend because I rely on having the tools and materials I need when I need them. So the bottom line is, you can't go wrong with T & L H! They know their stuff, their prices are competitive and they have what you are looking for, so what are you waiting for? Give'm a call, check'm out online or head down there in person and pay'm a visit. And no this was not a PSA, I did not get paid to say this nor am I affiliated...
Read moreWent on 1/2/17 for the first time. Read previous reviews about bad staff and dirty conditions. Did not find either to be true. Train staff asked if I needed help and I got help when I needed it. Lots of stuff in the store. As others have said pricing is high - probably full retail.
I looked at N scale. They have a very extensive amount of rolling stock and engines, including some steam. They do not stock Micro-Trains, but had many other manufacturers. I saw quite a few Deluxe Innovations 1944 type box cars which seem to be OOS at DI and most online stores. Selection of building kits was a bit more limited. Lots of Cornerstone kits, but very few DPM kits or modulars. Some Atlas, Lifelike, Model Power, a little Pikestuff, and a few others. Lots of the Woodland Scenics built-ups. Not too much available for the detailer or scratch builder. Had Kato and Atlas track, a little Pico, too. Motive power was from Altas, Kato, Broadway Limited, Athearn, Bachmann, Fox Valley. More N scale than you are likely to see in most places.
Overall a pleasant experience. Surprised at how many people were...
