The Baseline: For a grocery store it must have a wide selection of items, the produce/bakery/meat selections must be fresh, the store aisles need to be clean/organized, the traffic flow must be logical, the prices must reflect the value, and the service from staff must be good.
Update 8/30/2025:
Food: Came in for milk, eggs, cereal, smoothies, and got the Coconut red lentil soup. Loved the hot bar soup and the smoothie was good. Love my higher quality eggs and milk from Erewhon.
Service: All the store staff were friendly and helpful looking for items we came in for.
Ambiance: The aisles were clean and fully stocked. The layout is a complete grid and the aisle sizes allowed for 2 carts to pass by comfortably.
Price: This is a higher end grocery store but there is still items here that you will not find in most other grocery stores. I am paying for quality eggs with orange yolks and my A2 milk has real cream on top, there is a difference.
Original review: Food: This is a higher end grocery end grocery store based on providing clean/single sourced/regenerative/organic/etc. foods. You will not find a lot of production foods with the chemical ingredients here (aka no Little Debbie, Kellogs, Kraft, etc.) that are all to common to American diets. The food bar areas have a lot of fresh cooked foods and I didn’t see an over-abundance of fried foods (aka chicken strips). There is also a smoothie bar here as well that is very busy.
Service: All the store staff were friendly and helpful looking for items we came in for. Register check was quick and efficient. We also signed up for the EREWHON yearly membership (includes a monthly smoothie and 10% off).
Ambiance: The aisles were clean and fully stocked (note this was day 2 of being open). The layout is a complete grid and the aisle sizes allows for 2 carts to pass by comfortably.
Price: This is a higher end grocery store but there will be items here that you will not find in most other grocery stores. The price is also reflective on quality when it comes to less mass produced food items, regenerative foods, and single sourced foods. There is a $20...
Read moreAs a long-time fan of the Erewhon brand and someone who’s visited many of their other locations, I was excited to check out the new Erewhon in Manhattan Beach — and it did not disappoint! Open for about two months now, this location is 15-minute drive from the beach. It's noticeably larger than several of their other stores, which gives it a more open and airy feel. Despite visiting on a Sunday afternoon, it wasn’t overly crowded — a pleasant surprise compared to other Erewhons I’ve been to. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the variety at the food and smoothie bar was excellent, as always. One standout feature here is the dedicated pizza station — you can customize your own pizzas, which is a nice, unique touch. They also had a solid selection of Erewhon merch, including some exclusive Manhattan Beach gear that fans of the brand will appreciate. The store is part of a well-located shopping complex with other great spots like Trader Joe’s, BevMo, and REI — making it a convenient stop. There’s a nice outdoor seating area to enjoy your food, EV chargers right outside, and even a spot to lock up bikes. A couple of downsides worth noting: the men's restroom was poorly designed — only two stalls and no urinals, which led to a bit of a wait. (Oddly, there was no line for the women’s restroom.) Also, checkout was a bit slow, though the staff stayed friendly and courteous throughout. Overall, this is a very welcome addition to the Erewhon family. While I do wish it was a bit closer to the actual beach, it still makes for a solid destination with great amenities and a clean, spacious vibe. Definitely worth a visit if you’re...
Read moreI’ve been a loyal Erewhon customer for over 4 years, and one of my all-time favorites has always been the breakfast burrito. But sadly, my recent visit to the new Manhattan Beach location left me completely disappointed.
The burrito is noticeably smaller almost half the size of what I’ve consistently received at the Santa Monica and Venice stores. Even the portion of salsa that comes with it has shrunk.
I always feared that rapid expansion might compromise quality, and unfortunately, that fear has become a reality.
Are you really trying to cut costs like this at the expense of loyal customers? Super sad to see this happening.
UPDATE 1: To make things worse, I ordered the vegetarian burrito, but when I got home and started eating, I realized it was the vegan one instead. Can you imagine how frustrating that is? I was super hungry, and I just can’t eat that tofu stuff.
When I came back to the store, I called the manager right away and told him the whole story. He was nice and immediately ordered the correct vegetarian burrito for me. Thank you for that.
And you know what’s the funny part? The second burrito the correct one, came with the right size salsa, not that tiny portion I got the first time. Come on, how is that even possible?
UPDATE 2: And now… it just feels like it’s not my day. 😭 I got home, opened the replacement burrito and guess what? It wasn’t vegetarian either. It was a bacon and egg burrito!
I honestly just want to cry at this point.
I’m so disappointed. This isn’t what Erewhon used to be. Please fix this before more loyal...
