Just went for my first time to Keystone Shooting Center today and not entirely sure I’ll be back. I was excited about coming here for weeks after ho-hum experiences in the south hills. When I first came in, I was definitely impressed my the place. They have a huge selection of guns and accessories. That’s about where my great impression ended. The staff at the very front counter were busy ringing people up and I had no more time to waste waiting for a greeting. I was tired of waiting in what looked like a checkout line for purchases so I wandered a bit to another checkout desk in the back of the store where it read “Range Check In” or the like. After waiting in another decent line I was told I had to go sign a waiver... in the front of the store. After signing the waiver and the waiting in line, again, I was told to wait further for a machine to reboot. They hold your license and you pay at the end of your session. Seems OK. The range itself was nice. There were oodles of hipsters and rental pistols and a few older couples shooting. I enjoyed my hour session and the RO was friendly. Yes they remind you when your time is almost up but they need to to keep things moving. When I left the range room I nearly threw up in my mouth looking at the size of the line at the range desk. I now had to wait, again, to get my things and pay. Not sure if it was people cashing in their Groupons or just a holiday (New Year’s Eve) rush but it was really annoying to once again have to wait just to leave. I also wanted to look at guns to buy, so I asked the woman at the counter if they sold used guns. She said yes, and they should be somewhere over there... pointing to the entire store and all the guns. Whaa? Thinking about it all, this place is going to make a killing. The current gun legislation limbo and per-capita earnings demographics will have every middle-aged man within 10 miles coming here to drain their wallet on a pricey pistol they can lock up in a safe or the hip younger kids who want to shoot for the first time or blow cash on ten seconds shooting a full auto. I was seeking a place in the Pittsburgh area to come and regularly shoot. Going by the lack of organization flow and overall annoyance of waiting in line after line then another line I think I’ll pass. Very impressed by the actual facility. If they dialed up the training, greeting, and flow of operation I would consider...
Read moreReally disappointed, I purchased a firearm online from these guys and 5 days after the transaction was completed I received a phone call advising me they made a mistake (typo) and cannot send the item to my FFL, however if I was willing to pay them $500 more over the phone then they can complete the transaction. I was then informed that the manufacturer of the item I purchased has a minimum advertised price (MAP) and that the seller had been flagged for being under that price, again I was advised of this 5 days after they had received and processed my payment and FFL details for transfer. I was then told that if the manufacturer found out that they sold the firearm for the original price i had paid they would get in further trouble and risk losing their license to sell the brand, so I took it upon myself to call the manufacturer directly and while they do have a MAP they do not monitor or care what dealers sell their items for. So that was a lie and an excuse to get out of honoring the original sale. I understand people make mistakes and in this instance I believe the seller when they said there was a mistake made when listing the item online. I would have liked them to honor the sale and accepted the loss on the item especially given I have purchased from them in the past and profits from past sales likely exceed the loss they may have incurred on this sale. Finally upon asking what other remedies were available the company told me the lowest price they could sell the item for, which turns out to still be more than the item costs them so they are still wanting to make profit from me despite messing me around and holding my money for the best part of a week. I realize business don't like to lose money nor is it ever the goal of business however in this instance I was first lied to then met with no willingness to compromise (other than pay them their new asking price). Yes they apologized and were polite during communication, I don't believe they intended to mislead or scam anyone I just felt that in the end they had a choice to either 1. honor the original sale price, accept the loss and keep a returning customer which would enable them to make up the loss on my future purchases or 2. refuse to honor the original sale, lose a customer for life and receive a negative but truthful review of...
Read moreMy son and I have been coming to Keystone regularly for a month now, and we chose to spend our Labor Day there as well. It has been a great experience.
We rented a few guns until we got comfortable and took the Basic Pistol Class. Eric was excellent, totally focused on safety and technique.
I bought my 10mm there as well as a gun safe, and the process was easy and straightforward. My only gripe and why I give 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wanted to buy a Gen 5 Glock as well, which they didn't have in stock and they refused to order it for me saying they did not do custom orders. I am not sure if it is because they are a Sig premier dealer or for some other reason. Their relationship between Sig and Glock isn't my problem, and it made things inconvenient in that respect.
They would have made some money on ordering the gun and selling at MSRP, which i was happy to pay.
So i had to order the other gun at a different place.
So, 4 stars instead of 5 because of that.
Anyway, my son and I were very impressed with Eric and so came back to take the Advanced Pistol class which has honed our skills and as a bonus we got to shoot on the VIP lanes which was a real treat. Eric also taught us about the importance of dry firing at home with a quarter on top of the slide. Those are very valuable gems of a lesson.
We have been back several times to rent rifles and pistols of other calibers, and the range staff are very valuable. Ray and Ed, in particular, are both super friendly and very knowledgeable and are happy when time permits them to give helpful advice on things like trigger management and EDC carry recommendations!
As others have stated, the facility and showroom are exquisite and immaculately clean.
My son and I are coming back every week or two for range time, and I will consider them for my next purchase of a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle.
Kudos 👏 to Eric Moore, Ray, and Ed as those are three employees that really make Keystone shine.
I just wish they would be willing to order things they don't happen to have in stock so Keystone could be our one-stop 2nd Amendment shop. Also, one other suggestion is if they had ammo available for sale in larger quantities such as 1,000 round cases.
Overall, though, Keystone is, undoubtedly, the Pittsburgh metropolitan areas' best shooting destination...
