Don't get me wrong; Retro Betty is still my favorite store, but I've been less impressed the last few times I've been there. When I found Retro Betty, it was a dangerous discovery that required a great deal of self-control not to leave the store with an entirely new wardrobe. Everything was cute and solved the biggest problems of modern fashion. A significant portion of the dresses had sleeves and good necklines, the fabric was high-quality unlike the fabrics at most stores that are so thin that every line of what you're wearing underneath shows or that are transparent altogether, and most of the dresses and skirts had pockets. The last few times I've been there, not so much. You'll still find pockets in most of the dresses and skirts, but the fabric quality and modesty of dresses leaves much to be desired. There was one skirt I almost got, but the pockets were too small to fit my phone, and there was a shirt that was a cute style, but if I'm going to pay boutique prices for clothes, I don't want to have to wear a shirt under a transparent shirt. I've also noticed an increase of dry clean only items, which has driven me away from some of the things that have caught my interest. I'm casually keeping an eye on their website, and I'm hoping it will get back to more of the way things used to be when the weather cools down and sleeveless dresses aren't in...
Read moreDisappointed in the way we were treated and the experience. We wanted to buy a dress but the staff was horrible. The staff was following us around (4-5 staff members), watching us browse the store like we're criminals. My friend of color felt especially profiled. Along with unfriendly/judgmental staff the store was super crowded with overpriced merchandise.
While we were there STILL browsing we audibly heard the staff say "What is that smell? Did they steal something?", I don't know if they were thinking a perfume was stolen or what, we didn't sample any perfumes (there was no perfume samples?) and we were still browsing.
Sure, some cool products.. that you can find that online and not deal with judgmental/racist people treating you like a criminal. To add extra context, my friend of color wanted to purchase a dress for an important event coming up, but was too uncomfortable to try on the dress there. We just took a picture of the tag to see if we can locate another shop or purchase from who makes it. I wouldn't recommend this shop to anyone and will forever remember how we were treated.
Sincerely, a human being who deserves to be treated as such.
Also your stupid Australian Broches' are...
Read moreWent in the other day for a cutesy last minute dress for a graduation, and tell me why the whole staff minus the woman at the register, was following me around the whole store "fixing" things behind me the whole time? As if I were some sort of criminal? I understand shoplifitng may be an issue for the area, however I can't help but feel like it was a racially charged interaction, as I happen to be a poc.
At first I didn't mind until my husband (who happens to be a white man) walked in a few minutes after me, and also noticed the womens' behavior. For him to immediately pick up on the energy shift as soon as he walked into the store is embarrassing. When they finally walked away was when he met me by the dress racks and he informed me of what he belived to had been happening. We left the establishment shortly after.
This is not how you treat paying patrons of your establishment. Do better. I know the establisment is called Retro Betty, but I didn't think that the retro aesthetic in the year 2025 would also involve the racism.
Don't come here if you're brown, pierced, and have dyed hair. They'll automatically treat you like you're the skum...
