I appreciate Roots Cafe, and the option as a cleaner brunch location. We hardly have any other options like this at the moment in Salt Lake City. I have always enjoyed my food here, but I have not tried everything on the menu. The beverages are all incredible. I admire the creativity in the aesthetic and decorations, their hand-drawn specials menu behind the hostess counter, and their outdoor seating options year round. I see the female owner here almost every time I’m around, and I can tell that she cares a lot about her business. Thank you!
There is some feedback that I would like to mention about their service. Most of the servers/staff that work there are fairly friendly and nice. I don’t know why, but they always seem to have pretty low energy although that isn’t really a problem. I just don’t see too many smiles being passed around, and a smile always goes a long way in making a customer’s experience more enjoyable for them. However, I always feel taken care of, service and food comes out quickly, and I overall enjoy my experiences which is why I’ve come back multiple times.
Today my experience was unfortunately not ideal. Rachel treated my boyfriend and I horribly, and I honestly felt pretty attacked by her hostility and defensiveness when I was simply trying to solve a somewhat simple issue. We were inquiring about why I didn’t get a notification that my table was ready through my text messages with them. She immediately shut me and my boyfriend down, and told us in a harsh tone that we needed to come and check in with them up front otherwise there is no way that they know we are here and ready for our table. This absolutely makes sense. I just sincerely didn’t appreciate the fact that she talked right over me many times while I was trying to understand what had happened, or allow me to ask further questions because I was confused about the process and genuinely just was trying to learn for next time. She made my boyfriend and I feel horrible, and unfortunately uncomfortable enough that I would consider not dining here again. She has truthfully never been kind to us, and I’ve definitely never seen her smile which isn’t very welcoming when your job is to greet people. Definitely some of the worst customer service that I’ve ever...
Read moreGluten-free, vegetarian and conventional can all enjoy this darling little cafe. Roots Cafe is tucked into the neighborhoods of Millcreek and would be easy to drive by if you didn't know what you were looking for, although that would be a terrible shame! Working with fresh ingredients they are creating a diverse menu that accommodates many different dietary Styles without compromising on taste, quality or quantity. . Pictured here are two of my favorite dishes. First, their smoked salmon Benedict served on polenta with a simple side salad. Admittedly I am not a polenta fan but this is one of the few places I enjoy it! Firm in texture while still staying moist the polenta is infused with great Flavour. I can always count on the Poached Eggs being exactly what they should be and the hollandaise being smooth and creamy. . In the second picture is there brilliant buckwheat pancakes. Whether you are gluten free by dietary need or not these are a delicious hearty pancake that is rare to find in its pure form. I request it served with the warm Berry compote that generally comes with their ricotta Citrus Crepes, which are also a great menu item. . Another favorite that draws me to this spot are their fresh pressed juices, which can be served with coconut water, as well as their high quality teas and coffees which balance this out as a complete meal. . 💲 - $$ 🍽 - Fresh contemporary American Cuisine for breakfast and lunch 📍 - Roots Cafe, 3474 S 2300 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84109 Ambience - Fun and quirky spot located in historical building next to an antique shop that is enjoyable to browse if you are waiting for a table. Read moreI've eaten here 3x now and each time the food has been progressively more bland. I get it.. The food is prized on being "fresh" and healthy. But here's the thing! You can still use spices and actual herbs on the food to make it flavorful! Using a pinch of salt and pepper on the eggs would go far! Using some oregano, paprika, or thyme on the rest of the food? Even better! Herbs shouldn't be reserved just for biscuits...
For those that still want to try the place: the Peeto sandwich I've had multiple times and it's good - the spicy sausage and bacon is where you get all the flavor, otherwise it's pretty bland. The burrito my partner had this latest time, and the saving grace was the ketchup and Cholula on the table. If there wasn't any sauce, it would be bland as hell to eat. We also got the bread pudding French toast to try - it tasted like if Thanksgiving was a flavor.. it has cranberries cooked into it, so be aware they're not a garnish. Not my thing, but I see how it's appealing for others - but it straight up tastes like Thanksgiving or Christmas.
If they increased using seasonings the place would be much much better. For the wait and the flavor profile of food you get, the place is overhyped, trying to be Portlandia and catering to foodies when it just misses the mark each time. At this point we're...
