Okay, true confession -- I am as much an addict of "Big Box" stores as the next gal, but if there was ever a time in history when we should all be supporting small businesses, it just might be now. A great place to start is at Charlie's House. Owned by the delightful, friendly, and endlessly creative Kristin Miller, the shop is located in the wonderful little town of Monrovia, CA on a main street that still has a Friday night fair and town events most weekends. The name "Charlie" comes from Kristin's nickname that her dad gave her when she was small. You can find her mom, Mary-Margaret, helping out some weekends. So yes, Charlie's House is not only a great way to support a small business but a way to support a wonderful Monrovia institution still run as a family business. I go to Charlie's house whenever I need a unique, well made, and creative gift. It is a great place to find seasonal items for others or for your home, as the inventory is frequently changed with the seasons or whenever fun new items catch the discerning owner's eye.
