Cafe de Olla in Monrovia is an absolute gem of a restaurant that offers a delightful blend of authentic Mexican flavors and a warm, inviting ambiance. During our recent visit, we had the pleasure of trying several plates, each leaving us with a memorable culinary experience.
The Bistec Ranchero with homemade corn tortillas was a true delight. The tender beef was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a medley of spices that added a bold and smoky flavor to every bite. The homemade corn tortillas were warm and soft, a wonderful complement to the savory steak. It was a dish that boasted both comfort and depth, leaving us yearning for more.
The Chicken Mole, also served with homemade corn tortillas, was a wonderful. The mole sauce was rich, thick, and layered with an intriguing combination of chocolate, chilies, and various spices. The chicken was tender and soaked up all the complex flavors of the sauce. The beans and rice harmoniously balanced with the sweetness and heat of the mole and homemade salsas that accompanied the dish. The sweet and heat lingered on the palate in the most delightful way.
Next, we had the House Special Omelette, and it was a cornucopia of flavors. Filled with ham, sausage, mushrooms, avocado, sour cream, and Jack Cheese, each ingredient contributed its unique essence to the overall dish. The surprise was the crispy chilaquiles that were folded in with the other ingredients. The omelette was fluffy and generously packed with the savory goodness of the meats and the creaminess of the avocado and cheese. Every bite was an explosion of flavors and textures, making it a must-try item on the menu.
To accompany our meal, we indulged in Iced Cafe de Olla's, and they were truly amazing. This refreshing take on a traditional Mexican coffee beverage combined the richness of coffee with the delightful sweetness of cinnamon and piloncillo. It was the perfect cooling companion to the bold and savory dishes we had on a rather warm day in Monrovia.
The restaurant itself was alive with patrons, yet not overwhelmingly crowded, providing a vibrant atmosphere without sacrificing intimacy. Despite the full house, we were seated promptly. Ruben's efficient and dedicated service, his insightful recommendations, especially the Chicken Mole, and friendly vibe elevated our dining experience and left us thoroughly impressed.

I ordered the three taco dinner plate which offers a choice of chicken, beef or veggie tacos. The plate included some formed rice, frijoles, and a mild guacamole sauce. The tacos were the small corn tortilla variety with onion and cilantro. I ordered chicken and beef tacos.
I also ordered a mocha frappuccino.
The best part of the meal was the mocha frappe which was a mix of coffee, what I believe was Mexican chocolate with cinnamon, a hint of cream and slushy ice. It was unique and different from any frappuccino I have had before, initially a bit strong hit of the cinnamon, not very strong coffee or chocolate taste, but very good and recommended.
The tacos were pretty average, I've had tacos across the United States, Japan, Northern Mexico and Guanajuato, Mexico and overall a little disappointed. The included sauce provided on the side was the highlight of the dish. The frijoles worked well with the tacos, but overall the meal seemed less flavorful than I am used too.
Inside has narrow walking paths. Booths are provided for seating inside, outside on the sidewalk round tables with plastic chairs are available.
I felt it was rather loud inside considering the few customers that were dining at the time, it felt like there were more employees than customers. Comparing the inside seating to the outside street side seating, it seemed quieter outside.
The decor is nice and casual.
This was my first visit to Cafe De Olla. One companion joining me in dining had been here two times before, the other companion had been there one prior time.
One companion had a sandwich which when I asked them about their meal, they stated they enjoyed. The other companion joining me ordered the Churro Waffles. They indicated they absolutely loved. the Churro Waffles. The smell of the waffles was very powerful and smelled like Cinnamon buns.
I was impressed to see Torta's and Mole on the menu, which reminded me of Guanajuato, however I didn't try either of them, so I can not comment of their taste or value.
Portions were much smaller than I am accustomed, especially considering the prices. I was hungry...
