Keycuts — Local services in Montclair

I was in the area yesterday and needed a last-minute undercut and decided to call this place to see if they could take a walk-in.

From the call, the owner Zane was really cool and professional, so I was encouraged to take a chance from that interaction.

When I walked in, everyone formally was introduced as I was a first time customer and everyone said hello and was so kind.

I sat in the chair and the Barber I was seeing, Rob gave off such very kind and gentle energy while also being serious about his work.

He was meticulous and took his time to achieve basically perfection. (I’ve gotten 3 compliments on the precision of the cut and the grading since yesterday).

He even stopped to ask and ensure that he could cut a certain part of my hair (many barbers could do better with this instead of cutting and ruining people’s hair)

The vibe was professional, welcoming to people from all walks of life, it seems and the shop was very clean.

Keep in mind that I’m a woman who was getting an undercut for a look. So feeling welcomed and not getting weird vibes from the Barbershop, that ALSO knows how to achieve a FEMININE look is VERY hard to come buy all at once.

Making this place a literal GEM.

In the end, I also wasn’t overcharged by the owner, some shops charge more to women for similar hair cuts as some sort of premium. I was encouraged to tip well to the barber because of the fairness of the owner. Sometimes the prices that the owners set can get in the way of the tips of the Barbers if you feel fleeced. So him and Rob have great integrity for that.

I have found my Barbershop home after bouncing around for a few years since going to my old Barbers all the way in Brooklyn has become just too time consuming in terms of the drive since moving to New Jersey.

I went to Keycuts this morning for a cut with Cycy - the Pretty Barber. She did a great job with my hair -she was on time, friendly and professional. This was my first time in the shop and my first time with her. She asked me how I’d like my hair cut, listened and answered all my questions. She took the time to make me feel welcomed and to understand what I was looking to have done. I couldn’t be more happy. I will definitely come back the next time I need a cut. While I was there I also met the owner, Zane and another barber, Landon. Everyone in the shop had a positive time vibe. There was plenty of room for the people waiting for appointments to chill and relax. It is evident that the design was well thought out - comfortable seating, a place to hang your jacket, board games and books available for those waiting for appointments….. The process was smooth, I made my appointment online so there was no wait and I was finished in time to run some more errands. Zane has done a wonderful job with everything from the atmosphere (great artwork on the walls, a welcoming vibe and a clean and neat space) to the logistics & staffing. It was a quick drive from West Orange, easy to find and parking right across the street. If you’ve never been you’re in for a treat - I can’t recommended this...

I went in there trying to support but the barber I got wasn't great (Rob). Messed up my C cups on my lineup and left me with a patch of hair missing on my right side. Didn't realized until I got home and my wife started laughing. I asked for a simple low taper and a 1 and 1/2 around. He couldn't even get that right. It's really unfortunate because I am looking for a barber that I can visit consistently. Also, the owner was nice, friendly and welcoming. He also gives one hell of a cut. I saw his work while in the chair. Cannot co-sign for anyone else. If you don't get Zane cancel your appointment. Would have given 1 star based on the cut but I don't want to hurt the biz. Just inform the public looking for a place for US.

Update: Owner Zane reach out and was very professional. Refunded my money, gave me a credit for another appointment and offered to fix the cut. I truly appreciate service like this and will take him up on his offer. Thank you for...
