It saddens me that I feel obligated to change my raving review from Valley M. from 5 stars to one. As someone who frequents the location multiple times a day (3 today alone) almost daily, the one constant I've noticed is that I am adamantly watched and followed the second I walk through the door until I leave. EVERYTIME I GO IN. I understand the need for loss prevention, especially w the HS in the vicinity. But this is ridiculous, and EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE! The first few times a just chucked it off as new business people in town who don't know any better. But after weeks of paid transactions & random conversations w staff id hope they'd realize, Im not here to rob you! Im not a teenager nor a thief. I hate walking through those doors now. Its the most degrading experience for Coffee and a sandwich? Just today I had two guys in plain clothes lock eyes on me INSTANTLY on walking in w/o pause. They even physically moved themselves and their conversation to various parts of the store to maintain a direct line of sight on me the entire time. They didnt have the decency to look away or play it off when I saw them watching me like I'm a venomous snake in the room trying to bite them. I was so tempted to call them out, But the clerk Max, who was making my sandwich at the time was there. I didn't want to disrespect or embarrass him. Max is usually there in the afternoons and one of the reasons I would go in. He's very personable, and the level of customer service and RESPECT he shows is phenomenal. His colleagues can learn a lot from him on how to treat costumers to solicit repeat business. Thank you Max, I shoulda tipped u more. You deserve it. I can get coffee and a sub (w/ week old bread) anywhere. They double the price of everything, deceptively omit item prices so they can constantly increase w/o awareness, serve old bread and disrespect the locals? You need to do better, this isn't a bodega in the hood. WELCOME TO MONTCLAIR! From one service manager to another: Use surveillance cameras to DISCREETLY watch for theft without offending or disrespecting your clientele. Don't treat your clients like thieves until IF/AFTER they do. Or move yourselves and inventory back to the hood and keep it behind plexiglass. I expect better from people of color. As a big quick chek lover I was very sad to see them leave this space BUT today I braved myself and visited the new space! To my surprise it pretty much stayed the same with new labeling, some added shelving and healthier fresh food snack options! They are clearly still unpacking and setting up but everyone was absolutely wonderful and welcoming! They even allowed for me to open up a milk that wasn’t present in the ice cooler! If you are missing anything just ask them they are very helpful! Valley Mart is my go-to spot! The store is always clean, well-stocked, and open 24 hours, which makes it super convenient no matter what time I stop by. Their staff is genuinely friendly and welcoming—you can tell they care about their customers. Prices are very fair compared to other convenience stores in the area, and the variety of products is impressive.
