Several months ago, we had two wedding bands made at S&K. Both ultimately were remade due to being presented with differences from what was discussed during consults, and only one of them was a ring we were more or less happy with. Having tried and failed for months to just be happy with what we got, I'm posting this review now to share my honest experience.
Staff are all very friendly and professional and were throughout the process. However, I was informed that the design I wanted had not been possible but this was not made clear to me until after the ring was fabricated and picked up. I asked for and recieved a rework on the ring I had made, for which I paid a substantial sum to add material (requested 18k gold, and not a exactly a lot of it for what I paid- probably a gram or under) to the design after originally paying for the ring up front. Then upon pickup of the redesign I was told that 14k gold had to be used instead. I would have had no issue with this if it had been explained ahead of time, and/or if it had been factored into what I paid for the additonal material. A stone was also loose upon final pickup. This was corrected for free but was only corrected because I noticed it immediately. Overall I was okay with the final product, but getting it to that point was a major stress during wedding planning.
The OTHER ring (photos attached)- which I wear, unfortunately- originally had the stones configured completely differently than discussed during the initial consultation. A remake was offered and this was done for "free".
However, the remake was comprised of synthetic aquamarine and 3 much smaller sapphires than the originally presented ring, which had two lab sapphires and a larger central sapphire. We did not find out about the replacement with synthetic aquamarine until we got appraisal documents. Aquamarine was never discussed for the ring and was a total surprise. No rationale was given for why the original secondary stones weren't reused or at least replaced with equivalents. The new set of gems was lower in value than the original set by what appears to be a fairly significant margin, based on stone pricings listed on S&K's site. The workmanship of the flush settings is questionable and visually unappealing, according to the several comments I've gotten on it. I had a stone fall out after less than 2 months of wear. This was repaired for free and quickly, but still. I also recently noticed that a different sapphire now appears to have fractured. No idea if that happened during resetting or later. I've been extremely careful since the other stone fell out.
All in all, S&K has some beautiful pieces and is obviously capable of great artistry in jewelry. However, we did not have this experience. It felt like very little thought or effort was put into our rings, particularly the one I wear. All of our interactions at the store were pleasant and polite. We should have discussed our concerns more upon pickup and appraisal, but after already having to get remakes, we just wanted to be done as our wedding date approached. We really didn't want to be problem customers and tried to avoid that at every step, to our own detriment. The reworks were only requested because in both cases the product was different to what was discussed.
Unfortunately I cannot recommend S&K and will not be returning for future purchases. I'm looking forward to having a decent ring made elsewhere that can actually be a symbol of my marriage and not a reminder of a bad experience and large expenditure for a product that only makes me sad. We'll see if this ring lasts until then.
2 stars for them being really friendly and willing to do remakes when there were problems (even ones that should not have been necessary to begin with and including...
Read moreOmg I am in love with this place and the services they offer. My step dad goes to see John all the time for estimates and advice on different pieces he has come by through his family. I got a Xmas gift certificate through them and honestly I was a little hesitant about them being that it was my first time going there. Well, I was very impressed. I had a couple memorious pieces that needed repaired. First, I got a beautiful permanent heart shaped bracelet there. Then I spoke to the staff about repairs, which are all done in store ( not sent out). I have had a beautiful emerald and diamond ring that my biological father gave me over 25 years ago, but unable to wear it because I am no longer ring size 7. They up sized my ring two sizes and cleaned it beautifully. There are no seems, no damage to the gold or anything. It was done with care and expert precision. I had a charm holder that needed repaired and is better that when I bought it 20 years ago. Broken bracelet shortened and fixed. And going back to have a mom charm that my son went with an ex boyfriend to gift me over 20 years ago. I have worn it almost every day since. My fixing it is not so good but works for now, will look brand new when they get done with it. Everything that I have gotten back looks amazing. ( Plus, maybe add my mom's emerald piece to it) If you need any kind of repairs done go here. Oh btw, I had 90 percent of my jewelry back in a short period of time. They are professional, honest, quick, and truly caring about the work they do. Highly recommended. Omg guys like my charm that has been broken for over 15 years was fixed beautifully and added my mom's charm. Amazing. There was a mishap and mix up on which of my two bracelets to repair and shorten, it happens, but because of the mistake, which is very rare, they are human, they completely replaced it brand new. What company usually does that. This is one business that my family and I will continue to go to. He had a necklace and ring that needed repaired and came...
Read morePurchased a setting from this store and have had nothing but problems. Wore the setting for ONE day and some of the stones fell out! I called and they said they would fix right away so I made the hour trip to return the ring for them to fix. I understand, things happen. Weeks later, I call to find out when my ring will be done and they tell me they need to order a new setting because they are afraid it is faulty. OK, I am understanding, but am a little frustrated that they didn't CALL ME to tell me of this snag. Plus, why didn't they already order the replacement setting? But I say yes, order it and let me know when it's done. Couple weeks go by and I CALL THEM again to check on ring. THEY STILL HADN'T ordered the replacement. This is WEEKS later and let me remind you, they've had my stone this whole time. Finally, I decide to tell them to just send me my stone certified mail since I live so far away (their suggestion) and give me a credit for the full amount. ANOTHER week goes by and still no sign of my stone or $$$. I CALL THEM AGAIN and they still had not sent my stone or refunded money. Terrible customer service!!! I will make the drive to Morgantown to get both my stone and my money because they do not do what they say they are going to do. I have been dealing with this since December and it was a $2,500 setting, so not cheap. Be very careful! UPDATE: Picked up my stone and refund. They were polite and apologized with a sincere note and compensation for travel. The most I can ask is that they realize the error and work to do...
