The employees are typically friendly. I was once a returning costumer, as I have bought multiple comics, and have brought over at least 10 friends, all new costumers, to this store due to the large comic selection. After yesterday, my friends and I will never be returning due to an incredibly nasty and ridiculously rude interaction with Joe, the store’s owner.
After a very long day at Sailfest, supporting local businesses, I invited my friends over to the comic store while we waited for one of our favorite bars to open. I led my friends through the store and offered to pay for the comic he wanted. After guiding them, I decided to sit in a corner to rest as I had been walking around for at least 6 hours straight in the Festival, and my joint pain was flaring up. I quietly sat in a corner and decided to play with the idea of buying The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1, which is over 1,000 pages. I had already bought the first chapter of the Walking Dead comic series from the store a few weeks before. Now, I decided to read about a few pages of the Compendium to decide if this was a worthy investment. It all seemed great as this also allowed my joints to rest for a few minutes while my friends finished up choosing comics, some of which I would help pay for.
My boyfriend and my friend came to me after finishing choosing, and were able to witness how rude and classless Joe was with me after reading for a little less than 10 minutes. He stands less than 3 feet away from me saying “You cannot sit here and read comics, that’s not how this store works.” The look in Joe’s eye was threatening but I decided to respond kindly anyway by telling him “Oh I’m just reading a bit of the Compendium-“ to which he cuts me off by saying “I know what it is.” I’m very jarred by his aggressiveness as it is unprovoked and I continue saying “Yes I’m just reading a bit to see if it’s worth it.” He responds by lying and saying I had been “reading for over 15 minutes” and that I “can’t come into the store and not pay for anything.” I clarify and say that “I’m a returning costumer and that me and all of my friends are about to buy many comics altogether.” His response, with a smile on his face as if to mock me, was “That’s great, you cannot just read the comics.” Employees have never harassed me for flipping through comics because they see me buy them. That day, I saw several people reading through comics for several minutes (which makes sense as this allows us to see if we’re interested in buying) but I seemed to be the main costumer that was harassed, perhaps because I was sitting? Not sure. I stared back at him, dumbfounded at his treatment of paying costumers that are giving him business and after several seconds he told me (referencing my dumbfounded stare) that “he doesn’t care about my attitude.” All with a smirk on his face, as if to show that he enjoys harassing QUIET and PAYING costumers that are not bothering anyone in a pretty empty store. I sarcastically told him that he is a wonderful business man with incredible costumer service, and neatly put back the Compendium. My friends and I paid for the comics that we chose, because we are costumers with CLASS, and I told Joe, as I walked out the store, that I would be writing him a review that reflects his attitude but he chose to ignore me - all with that condescending smile, once again.
I am friendly costumer so I have never been treated with such crass by any store owner before in my life. I feel bad for his employees, as I’m sure they don’t get paid enough to put up with his gross, juvenile and...
Read moreGreat store for gaming, good store for current comic books, not so good for back issue comics. Harrison Henderson has it right, the store itself is huge but the non-Modern back issues are only a small section and in disarray. Last time I went in the back issues were organized by character and not by, you know, the alphabet. They have a few older books in a case but nothing to write home about. For a better back issue selection I'd drive 1/2 hour north to Wonderland Comics in Putnam, that's the best comic store in eastern CT with apprx. 250 long boxes of back issues (50,000 - 60,000 comics). Plus, Rich Annino is incorrect, Sarge's does NOT have "easily the largest selection of comics in Connecticut", not even close. Guess he's never been west of the river or gone to Wonderland or Buried Under Comics in Manchester. Also, I have never had a problem with the workers at Sarges, so I can't speak to that, but everyone can...
Read moreThis place is absolutely great. So much merchandise. And that's perfect for me as I'm more into the merch than theb comics. Dont get me wrong l, comics are awesome. I just like the "stuff" better. And Sarge's has SO much stuff. Vintage stuff, new stuff. High end stuff as well as affordable stuff too. The prices are absolutely fair. Lower than most other places I've been too. The staff is warm and welcoming and loves to interact. Super friendly atmosphere. I dont make it up that way too often as I live 60 miles away. I just might make this my go to place when I'm in the area. I do cone up here to visit another collectibles store but u just might make this ny first stop from now on. It just that awesome all around. Oh and on a Tuesday, late afternoon, I got a parking spot right in front of the store. There were quite a few spots open too. So parking was a breeze too. I'll def be back...
