One Manhattan West is a 67-story office skyscraper completed in 2019, standing 996 feet tall. It was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and built by Tishman Construction. Located at 395 Ninth Avenue, it partially cantilevers over active railroad tracks leading into Penn Station. Its reinforced concrete core carries most structural loads, allowing the perimeter columns to be transferred above the lobby. The lobby is 45 feet high and column-free, enclosed by triple-height glass fins. The eastern façade bows outward until the 19th floor, then tapers inward, using curved insulated glazing panels. The building’s corners have a 107-inch radius for smoother transitions. The core walls are up to four feet thick and include 75-foot diagonal steel kickers to distribute loads. The foundation covers only 30 percent of the site due to the tracks below. The lobby contains 400 tons of Italian travertine, carved using CNC machines. Floors have 13.5-foot slab-to-slab heights and 42-foot spans between core and curtain wall. The tower includes 2.1 million square feet of space and targets LEED Gold certification. It was the first tower completed in the Manhattan West development. The southern lobby overhangs the tracks by 20 feet. The elevator lobby is clad in marble, with black Canadian stone floors and wood-paneled walls. The building’s plaza is 23,809 square feet and serves as a public entry point. Anchor tenants include Skadden, Arps and the NHL. Ownership is shared by Brookfield, Qatar Investment Authority, and Blackstone. The curtain wall was designed to resemble milled...

The building has a sleek, futuristic design that feels almost like it belongs to a sci-fi world—one that wouldn’t be out of place as the headquarters of Stark Industries from Iron Man!
The architectural philosophy behind it is intriguing, though I’m not certain how much depth there is in the design’s functional aspects versus its aesthetic appeal. Its towering, glass-covered structure gives it a clean, streamlined look, projecting strength and modernity in the heart of Manhattan West.
