I really wanted to like this place; I work nearby and decided to visit it for the first time while my mother was visiting in town. I saw the door right open and we walked right in. As it was my first time I wanted to see what was on offer. In less than 10 seconds a tall gentlemen on staff in front of the counter inquired if I was dining in (I don't recall any warm welcome). I told him I just wanted an iced coffee and he motioned me to the counter for take out. The office coffee was highly recommended to from my coworkers (It's $7, but it's amazing, they said). I wanted to see what other options for style of coffee I had, but let me tell you I have never felt so damn rushed to make an order. Yes I've lived in NYC for a number of years, but that doesn't automatically make me a coffee snob. What made things absolutely worse was the condascending tone of the staff member. As I was trying to figure out my flavor options, he was telling me something along the lines of "c'mon, it's coffee...y'know" and "don't touch that" as if I knew that menu iPad wasn't supposed to face me. Remember, it's my first time in here, I don't know how the ordering process works. I just settled for some basic iced coffee with some sweetener cause I just wanted to get out of there. What truly pissed me off was my mother SENSED all of this and decided NOT to order anything because she was so turned off by my treatment. English is not her native language, so of course it'll take a little more care and time to make sure she gets her order right, but she didn't want to bother. I was so excited to take her here and our first impressions were so disappointing. You're charging about a dollar per oz. of coffee, get it together; the whole experience was egregious. It's highly unlikely I will...
Read moreI don’t think I’ve ever written a negative review before, but I was extremely disappointed and embarrassed by my experience at In Common NYC for brunch on a Friday morning with a business partner. We arrived early before anyone else was in the restaurant, ordered two coffee drinks and breakfast, and had an associate join us about 45 minutes in, who also ordered two coffee drinks and breakfast. After being there for an hour and twenty minutes total, we were asked to leave because they have a one hour limit on tables. First, we weren’t aware of this / it was not made clear to us prior. I understand enforcing the rule when there is a line and you aren’t ordering anything, but we had ordered more than enough. In addition, the associate who joined us, had only been at his adjoining table for 40 minutes. At one point - when my drink wasn’t done - they had the folks next in line come to our table and the manager said audibly “it’ll just be 30 more seconds until you can get seated here.” For customers who were in the restaurant before anyone else, ordered more than what should be considered a minimum or even standard, it was a really improper way to treat clients. I was going to have a friend meet me there after my business meeting, where we would have ordered more and she was going to order breakfast, but they straight up told me we couldn’t do that. While the food was great and the spot was cute, I will never go back there again. They also wouldn’t let my business associate take out his laptop to show me a presentation when there was no one else in the restaurant at that time. This is Manhattan…your policies and strict adherence are...
Read moreI’d happily recommend In Common Cafe for some five-star food as long as you can tolerate the three-star service.
We stopped into In Common looking for a quick and tasty bite before we needed to catch a flight. While the food was extremely tasty it was not quick. We ordered the avocado toast and shakshuka toast.
Both toasts came on a wonderfully toasted sourdough bread. The outside was nice and toasted while the interior was fluffy and slightly crispy.
The shakshuka came with feta cheese and was topped with a poached egg. It was probably one of the best toasts I’ve eaten in my entire life. It was savory, crispy, chewy, and balanced out with the creaminess and freshness from the poached egg and feta cheese.
I did not try the avocado toast but was told it was also really good.
We waited around 30 minutes for our food. Waiting that long for food in the morning is already a negative, but when both tables to our left and right got their food before we did (which was exactly what we ordered as well) the only logical explanation I can think of was our server forgot about our food.
When we asked our server for the receipt he said “ok” and disappeared for another 10 or 15 minutes. It wasn’t until after we had to flag him down again that he told us we had to pay at the front. I can understand him being busy but this seems like something you could easily tell someone as they ask for the check to save both parties...
