I was absolutely unimpressed with this hotel. It’s not worth anywhere near $400/night.||The best part of the hotel is the location, across from Penn Station. We came in via Amtrak and used the subway and LIRR throughout our stay and never had to take a taxi or Uber. There is a placard in the room with a QR code to order food from a few local restaurants (a la DoorDash) that’s great after a long day of traveling. There are slightly cold bottles of soda and water in the lobby that you can grab and have charged to your room.||But I guess I was expecting too much from the most expensive hotel room I’ve ever paid for.||Housekeeping is done at the hotel’s convenience, not the guests’. In the two full days we stayed there, we did not get housekeeping once. The first day the housekeeping supervisor was near our door at 10:00 am and we said “we are leaving now, please make up our room.” When we got back at 3:00 and it had not been made up. They arrived at 3:30, 5.5 hours after we asked them to make it up, at a time when we had just exhausted ourselves and didn’t want to vacate the room. The second day we got no service at all.||I spoke to the manager about the lack of housekeeping and the conversation was:|“At 10:00 we asked the housekeeping supervisor to make up our room and it hadn’t been done by 3:00”|“Housekeeping has a list and they work until 5:30”|“I would have thought that when a guest asks that the room be made up, that it would be done reasonably soon. I guess I should have been more specific. For the most expensive hotel room I’ve ever paid for, clearly I was expecting too much.” He did send up more towels after a weak apology. | |It seems there is no service elevator which is a major inconvenience when they are bouncing between floors on the guest elevators. The elevators will spend inexplicably long times on the same floor and when it does come there’s a good chance it has a housekeeping cart in it. And there is no place for the staff to leave their bags of trash and dirty linens so they are left in the hallway. They should dedicate a single elevator for the staff during the day so guests don’t have to compete.||Breakfast was adequate. The room is crowded and they didn’t keep the coffee filled. Occasionally there was coffee in the lobby but it was removed during breakfast. They had really good blueberry and banana nut muffins the first day but the second day was cornbread muffins and prepackaged blueberry muffins.||The hotel opened in 2013 and there is an oddly-worded letter in the room that the hotel rooms weren’t designed for a mini fridge, but a limited number were available by calling. That’s great, but why is the manager pointing out the hotel’s poor design? Just tell people they can ask for a fridge and make it sound like a wonderful service you provide.||You may need to hunt for power outlets. There are 2 on the desk and more behind the bed table . The lamps have power outlets but you need a small charger to fit, like the little ones that used to come with iPhones. There are USB-A ports on the lamps. Every other Marriott property I’ve stayed at has USB and power outlets on the wall next to the bed.||If you do decide to stay here, temper your expectations. Get a room on a low floor so you can take the stairs when the elevators are monopolized by the staff. Have a backup plan for breakfast. Don’t expect housekeeping. And, if the manager is dismissive when you talk to him in person, write a review on...
Read moreWe had a group of 8, and booked several rooms here. Our stay was from August 31-September 1st. We tried to check in early at 1 pm, but there is a $75 fee to do so, so we decided to wait after 3pm to check in. No problem.
Upon arrival to the lobby, you notice immediately that there are several HVAC units on the main level: one in the lobby and another in the breakfast area. It should have been our first clue for what was in store.
First, they found our reservation, but for the wrong dates and a random stranger was on our reservation. Eventually our reservation was fixed. The take away here is that the front desk clerk was so snippy and even accusatory as to why our reservation was attached to a strangers.
We had HVAC issues during our entire stay. For our group, 2 out of 3 rooms had issues. After the first night, we realized that the room wasn't cooling any lower than 74 degrees. We made numerous requests with the front desk, one employee Rachel but did not get the name of the others. After several requests between Monday evening and Wednesday morning, we did not get an engineer to the room until Wednesday night.
It became a he said/she said regarding communicating our request. The front desk clerk even said they forgot to relay our request.
From our interactions, the engineer, who rigged our unit to stay on was so much nicer than the front desk. The front desk clerk late Monday night even yelled at an elevator full of people. She said, it won't be my problem if you get stuck on the elevator (there were 6 of us in it.). I've traveled enough to know that people in hospitality don't treat guests this way. Side note: during our entire stay, they only had two elevators working, which is not enough, especially during the check-in/check-out time frame for a hotel with 20 floors.
The rooms are average, the HVAC hardly worked, and the elevators were always difficult to access. We were on the 12th floor, and ended up using the stairs to the lobby because it was quicker than waiting for the elevator. I gave the two star review, because the breakfast is decent. enjoyed the feta and spinach frittata! One note on breakfast, the hotel had a hard time keeping the food available for the guests. They seemed to run out of everything and the guests were standing around, waiting for food to be replenished. I would have expected that they knew how many guests were checked in, and had an idea of how much food to have available for the mornings. limagine all of our issues are more of reflection of Marriott and the general manager. There's a trickle down effect toward the employees, which no one looked happy to be employed there. I felt bad.
I can't say that I would recommend the hotel. The frittata and proximity to the train station are probably the only highlights of my stay. Unfortunately, this hotel is not a good representation of the Marriott brand. No one cared and it was evident. I was disappointed. **attached photos include out of service elevator and HVAC unit...
Read moreRating is 4.5 for no fridge, but everything else was great!|This was our first day at a Fairfield in this location. |I was pleasantly surprised! |Check-In|There was no wait upon check-in even at 3:30 PM on Saturday. The attendant who checked us in was so friendly and put a smile on my face after a long day of travel. I wish I remembered his name, but it started with a D.|Elevators|There were 3 very fast elevators, and the only time we really had to wait for one was during breakfast time. |Room and Housekeeping |We had two queens and it was perfect. The only downside was that there was no fridge. There is a microwave in the lobby. The room was very very clean. I had zero complaints the housekeepers were very friendly and offered to take a bag of trash when I was leaving the room.|Location|The location is unbeatable. You are in the middle of everything. We were with two 13 year-old girls staying overnight for a concert at radio city music hall. we could’ve taken an Uber, but we decided to walk. It’s an 30 min easy walk. You are right by Penn Station, Koreatown, Time Square, Bryant Park, pretty much all the touristy areas. |Parking|The garage next door is the preferred garage for the hotel, but they aren’t connected. I got a SpotHero parking for $57 for my 36 hour stay.. This included the $10 oversized charge. Compared to the other garages in New York, this garage was so easy to get in and out- no long wait! We were the only cars dropping and picking up at the time. It was very odd how they weren’t busy at all. |Driving |Driving in on Saturday afternoon was very trafficy around Penn Station, but really not that bad. Leaving on Sunday morning was easy peasy.|Breakfast |Breakfast on Sunday was 7-10am. It had everything we wanted and more- all the hot bfast foods, cereals, touchless pancake maker, pre-made waffles, bagels, oatmeal, yogurt, boiled eggs, etc.|The staff really took care of everything and everyone. There was a guy walking around making sure everything was stocked and lady just wiping and cleaning the tables the entire time. I guess that should be the norm, but some of the big hotels don’t do it as much these days. I was very impressed.||Overall, it was a perfect overnight day. It wasn’t a five star just because there...
