Bronx School for Music — Local services in New York

My daughter has been taking piano lessons here with Santiago and Phil for a little over a year, and we couldn't be more pleased. We had previously hired a piano teacher that came to our home to teach her a couple of times but we quickly stopped after the pandemic hit. I decided to restart lessons at Bronx School for Music with Santiago and we immediately noticed a huge difference in quality of teaching. With Ms. Santiago she wasn't only learning to play a song, she learned how the piano worked, about how music conveys feelings, reading music, etc. All of the teachers we have encountered at BSM are professional musicians and that made a huge difference in my daughter's instruction that I was not expecting. There is a focus on this school on not only learning to play an instrument, but to learn to play it well and appreciate music overall. The school offers FREE musical development classes (choir, eurythmics, music appreciation) on Saturdays for those enrolled (your kid could stay at BSM for a big chunk of the day learning music!), and there's also free music theory online with the amazingly patient and kind Mr. Betson. My daughter recently had her first recital and it was inspiring to see all of the children show off what they had learned from their wonderful teachers. My daughter began studying piano at six years old at a different location. She became discouraged and quit after facing difficulties due to improper playing habits. When she wanted to play again, I was lucky to find Bronx School for Music. They diligently focused on helping her overcome those bad habits and work through her frustrations. She has been studying there for eight months and has made more progress than in all her previous lessons. She now knows proper techniques, body movement, and finger positions. She learned how to independently problem-solve issues she encounters when practicing her pieces. And, if she can't figure it out, her teachers (Philip & Josue) instruct her on different ways to find a solution.

The Bronx School for Music is definitely an excellent place for aspiring musicians. This is our first time to enroll our son to learn how to play the piano and we are very happy to see his eagerness every time he goes to his music school and he has improved so much in such a short period of time. Along with his piano classes, he also gets to participate in choir lessons and music theory and ear-training classes which is an additional help to improve his musical studies. Philip and the rest of the staff are very professional and passionate in dealing with the students and their families as well.
