At the end of 2020, I was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Navigating this challenging time was overwhelming, but with the love and support of my family, we decided that Columbia University was the place to be. I started with a wonderful Thoracic Oncologist who was moving on after only a few months of my journey. I was feeling uncertain, but trusted him to put me in good hands and he responded, "I'm not putting you in good hands, I'm putting you in GREAT hands!" And that is how I then met Dr. Catherine Shu.

Dr. Catherine Shu is the best of the best, when it comes to patient care, communication, and knowledge of her specialty. I was for tunate to be put in a eight-year clinical trial with Dr. Shu as oncologist, and her care was instrumental in saving my life. In fact, she did save my life, and I will always be grateful.

When the immunotherapy infusions acted with my own immune system positively, and the sizeable tumors shrunk, she monitored progress carefully, kept me informed, and encouraged me to resume activities as I felt better.

I had been given a life expectancy of six to nine months in February of 2016. By June of 2016, CT scans revealed that the immunutherapy infusions were working, and the tumors were shrinking. In a matter of months, my life was turned around.

When the clinical trial was ending, she made sure that I would still receive the infusions in another, separate trial. I kept feeling better, returned to work and activities, and was fortunate that the trial was successful, in my case.

Dr. Shu is not only compassionate, warm and personable with her patients, but also technically proficient and sharp as a tack. She is what all cancer patients deserve: a caring, knowledgeable doctor with an open mind to solutions, and a cooperative manner with her patients' and their schedules and needs.

After suffering a Major stroke and PFO heart surgery I was hit with stage 4 lung cancer. When I received my additional diagnosis, it was one of the scariest moments of my life, filled with uncertainty and fear for me and my family especially my daughters. From our very first appointment, Dr. Shu made me feel at ease, taking the time to listen to my concerns and ensuring I understood my diagnosis and treatment options thoroughly, greeting a room filled with just as anxious family members also putting them at ease.
