I just got back from India UAE and Sri Lanka and I knew I had to drag myself back to a gym. I looked at several- the big three: Chelsea Piers, Equinox and GYM U NYC. WITH THE WEATHER and jet lag and a recalcitrant butt, I was kind of in slo mo but today I finally picked GYM U. FIRSTLY, Gym U has hired the most personable and caring intake person for membership. His name was Philip. What makes him so impressive is a. He knows his stuff and he has a solid knowledge base b. He cared about me and listened to my needs and what would be the best fit for me at Gym U c. Philip was simply a nice guy. You could tell he loves his job, he loves Gym U and he wants you to love it as much as he does. I like people with moxie and who cares about their job. He gave me the tour and you could feel his excitement about not only working there but what makes this gym special. There has been some remodeling. I couldn’t put my finger on it but there was more pizzazz. A real crowd pleaser must be THE STEAM ROOM. It was huge and more importantly immaculate. It’s obvious hygiene is taken seriously here In addition he was very excited about their investment in Panatta gym equipment which is premier equipment from Apiro, Italy which is in the beautiful La Marche area- think Gubbio, Orvieto, Perugia and Assisi all beautiful villages in this area. Mamma Mia! You know those Italians they tie fantastic design to superior function. I am amazed the monthly fees aren’t more expensive. This equipment is like ART meets FORM meets function. It’s amazing. It’s the equipment the Roman gods use…. lol. He escorted me to his office and I enrolled and paid my starter fee. It’s a win win for me because I am lucky enough to live in the neighborhood and this gym has all the amenities one could ask for plus there is a convivial bar at the entrance. What a marriage Adrenalin and Alcohol! Oh there are classes which are included in the fees. I know this might sound a tad corny but the greeter who checks your membership when you come in probably was the winner of Mr Congeniality somewhere. But his personality sets the stage from the moment you walk in. I felt like I was treated like I had been a long term member. It’s not fake here, it’s genuine. Thanks Philip for your time and curated information. Oh, I don’t have a complaint but whoever named the bar it truly doesn’t go with the branding of Gym U. Maybe, David needs to have a contest for renaming it. But what do I know. ALSO the whole staff or team here works in synchronicity. The team that checks you in are NICE TO EVERYONE, the CREW here from mechanics to cleaning staff are constant keeping the place working and spotless. Hygiene is huge issue for me and I have not seen a more dedicated and consistent team here. I think hospitals could learn a few things here. Plus, it’s not like after they take your money you are treated like a number. Believe me this zufu or grandparent feels very comfortable here. When my Chinese grandsons were here from Virginia, I gave them a tour. They were in awe- especially with the ITALIAN EQUIOMENT. I LEAVE next month for an assignment in the Middle East. I look forward to returning. THANKS PHILIP!

The gym: the range of equipment is decent but too much flashy Panatta machines that hyperfocus on isolate muscles rather than building a comprehensive physique; it’s difficult to get a compound workout in here, there is one humble flatbench in the entire gym. I appreciate that half the gym isn’t allocated to treadmills like other gyms - this is a lifting gym. Gym etiquette: is severely lacking. Many members are too important to rerack their weights and working-in on a set with someone is a foreign concept, the vibe is snooty yet amateur. The facilities/amenities: are basic. At launch they provided body lotion in the locker rooms, nowadays all the soap dispensers are broken and half the showers do not work. The steam room seems to be the main draw at this gym, and it lives up to all the rumours. I should point out that there is a camera in the steam room, this doesn’t bother me but worth noting. Pricing: they raised the rates on founding members by 15% which is obscenely greedy and disrespectful to those who supported you from the beginning. I am not renewing. Overall: if you can overlook their treatment of loyal members this is a sceney social place to work out but, at the price-point offered, not for those serious about fitness.

Love it here. Can get a bit crowded at times but you know some things you just can’t get away from.

UPDATE.

Run away from this place. There’s a reason why this place is loosing great reviews left and right. There’s a reason why they are only 4 stars. Which is quite outrageous when you consider you pay anything from 190-225 a month at this place. In the beginning it was bliss. The staff was not only workers but your greatest confidants. They were encouraging and some of the best nurturing and caring employees you could find. But they were being taking advantage of. Some of them weren’t happy with their financial circumstances ( they pay their workers they same rate as a basic commercial local gym). Most people can’t survive off $17 an hour! Next! They fired the old manager as things went haywire. As someone who specializes in business for my job you could tell it impacted operations, staff due to lack of management. Lastly, the quality of the gym has changed. I’ve seen dead water bugs and a live mouse in the sauna. Also at one time it was unnerving to enter between seeing a mouse and the hardcore same sex that used to happen in there but thankfully it doesn’t happen anymore since there’s a camera. Albeit, I don’t feel confortable or safe here anymore. David, the owner prioritizes members and staff who have a similar physique of David’s own body. On Friday August 1st, around 09:30 pm David blantantly uses a machine I was about to use. I had all my equipment including my resistance band and my creatine filled water bottle by the machine. I don’t have to explain myself but the gym was closing in less then 20 minutes and I was trying to do a super set real quick and afterwards leave. I just came back from vacation. I’m not just upset about him doing that I’m upset that he wasn’t considerate and compassionately thinking about others who are trying to get a quick workout. Was extremely defensive at first and when I had explained I had no choice to do my super set I had to get a small medicine ball which unfortunately is downstairs. Also! Using kickbacks but the ankle attachment is also where ?! DOWNSTAIRS! Some major problems like gym design could be to blame for that. He basically blamed me for leaving my things when I had no other choice. After his defensive behavior he did offer to go to another machinery whole thing was I don’t want to have to clean this dud/ sweat when I feel I shouldn’t have to. My thing is people leave their equipment all other the gym. Even the trainers ! But that’s ok but your going to scold me when I don’t do that often! As you can read I didn’t have a choice ! My whole things was just be mindful there are other people working out. I have a hip abductor injury so I do need to work on my hamstrings to recover. Then he leave the machine and didn’t even wipe it down after. So after I had mentioned hey cleaning the equipment is also part of your policy and you didn’t even follow it him and his trainer or client tried to argue with me. I felt uncomfortable and outnumbered as David banned me from being a member. The staff working at the front desk was very nice, their name is Shannon and did apologize ok behalf of David. But that’s not good enough but I do appreciate Shannon. That was the only person who looked out for me and gave my Joey Perez , the manager’s contact info. I appreciate them giving me my refund swiftly and not making me wait around for it.

All in all. The machines are cool. I enjoyed my time there. I supported and even went to events which were nice and met some great people who I will cherish and hopefully maintain our friendships.

I went from a natural plump but to a massive butt that I get compliments around consistently. I worked hard, came early days and nights and remained consistent throughout my journey at this gym. I thank the staff for all the contributions they have made.

David, as a long supporting member I must say you are a joke. I always supported you even throughout your foolish decisions including the change of...

Great gym! I found this place because I live nearby and saw it from the outside and decided to tour. I'm glad I came here instead of going to a snooty gym like Equinox or Lifetime.

Membership is about a 1/3 or 1/2 of what it'd be at a "luxury" gym except if you actually care about fitness instead of status/brand you get way more.

The equipment is amazing. There is everything you need and some incredible very very nice machines. Every niche machine I've been able to find and generally I've never had to wait for a machine (except the reverse fly machine). There is a great assortment of cable attachments too.

A rack has always been available for me, even at peak times. I really like the brand they use it's super easy to adjust and the bench locks in on a track and it's so easy to adjust. It's a small detail but it really adds up to making a great workout. There are separate squat and deadlift platforms too.

There is an open area for stretching which is nice. It's a bit small but got the job done for me. One wish is that the mats were slightly thicker. That said, I have enjoyed the assortment of body weight equipment.

Secondly, everyone at the gym including members and staff are very passionate and friendly. It's a fantastic environment to be in and helps me enjoy my workouts.

The locker rooms and showers are decent. I don't they are as fancy as an Equinox/Lifetime but I'm pretty happy with it. The sauna is great after a workout and they have nice hairdryers (with diffusers!) and the basic products you need. I think if I had to ask for one thing it'd be a face wash/face lotion and a gentler shampoo since the shampoo in the shower is super harsh imo.

Overall this gym is the best gym I have been to anywhere. I am grateful to the opportunity to have been here for a year and am very sad I am...
