Read moreAn historic icon of NYC, meticulously restored with loving attention to detail, the in-progress newly revamped Chelsea Hotel is truly a marvel to see. Everything about the design and construction oozes of quality, from the ornate detail on the solid doors (even the closet doors are heavy, detailed and gorgeous), to the wood floors, and the fireplace tiles, which seemed to be in certain cases still original, adding to the appeal. We particularly loved the pink lady wallpaper in the closet. The white curtains with their semi distressed look and "holes" shine light through the windows giving the appearance of sparkling diamonds from a distance. Also, the selection of design aesthetics from the cheetah print chairs, purple couch (which was also by the way super comfortable), Marshall radio, and Asian themed coffee table might seem out of place by themselves and in any other hotel; all somehow work together perfectly, complimenting the overall eclectic theme. The church pews in the lobby were equally as cool. The staff was great, super friendly, and even left us a bottle of champagne in a bucket on ice with glasses and a personalized congratulatory note for our anniversary.
My wife and I also ate dinner at the equally fabulous El Quixote in the lobby. If you intend to stay, reservations at the restaurant are a must. The overall ambience is dark yet perfectly dimly lit. I particularly loved the lighting, cozy booths, and the distressed stucco ceiling which gives the appearance of eating in an ancient Spanish castle. Extra points go to the fact that we were frequenting the same space or possibly the same booth as Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin did back in the 60s. Highlights were the mescal margaritas, the artisanal selection of Spanish cheeses, and the lobster which was to die for.
Can't wait to visit again when the full restoration...
Read moreI have used the Chelsea Savoy Hotel as my base for NYC explorations for around two decades. Given my last two experiences, I won’t be back.
Though the hotel is nicely located, I can no longer deal with the noise and decaying infrastructure. After staying at the hotel for about 20 years, you’d think they might try to accommodate a regular patron’s basic needs.
A dear friend and I flew from Seattle to NYC in 2018 to celebrate her 70th birthday. We were given rooms on lower floors on the W 23rd side of the hotel. The noise there made it impossible to sleep. After many complaints, the hotel moved me to a quiet room. My friend, who became sick at the end of her visit, told me to take the only available quiet room and was forced to endure the din.
I understood that in 2018, that the hotel was at capacity and that their choices were limited. The hotel told me to ask for a quiet room on my next visit. My Partner and I decided to visit NYC again in mid April of 2024. I asked for a quiet room, both at booking and two days before we arrived. We were again given a room on the W 23rd St. side, albeit on the 6th floor. My Partner didn’t want me to complain, as he liked the street view. After a Saturday night filled with the noise of sirens, he conceded we should have moved. When we turned the water on in the shower in the mornings, the water came out murky and brown. After 15 minutes or so, it finally cleared. The furnishings/furniture was damaged and worn. The room’s curtains were patched with duct tape.
Bargains are good, but in my view, the Chelsea Savoy isn’t...
