I was walking by this supermarket, when I decided to stop in to buy some wild birdseed. I know exactly where to find if in the Montague Street Key Food, but couldn't locate any in this one. When I asked, I was told to try aisle 2, pet food. After walking up and down the aisle, I couldn't locate any, so I asked a young man who was stocking shelves. He grunted, never made eye-contact and stepped back.
I noticed he was wearing one red sneaker and one black, so I asked whether it was the new style. Again, he merely grunted and walked away. I thought he was leading me to the requested item, so I followed him. We walked to the end of the aisle, made a right, passed 2 or 3 other aisles and then walked down the full length of the last aisle against the back wall. Once we reached the corner, however, he simply disappeared down a staircase without ever having acknowledged me. I was bewildered, but then suddenly outraged when I overheard, "Oye, hay un pendejo aqui," meaning, "Hey, there's a pubic hair here!" (Pubic hair = slang for a nuisance.) So I was sure to declare, "Oye, soy Latina, y compreendo todo!" (Hey, I'm Latin and I understand everything.)
I then found the birdseed myself and went to pay at a cashier. She was Hispanic, so I mentioned what had just happened to her. She said something to the effect that 'one never knows who's going to understand'. True, but that's not the point! Well, I went home, but I was seething.
I lost my Wall Street job 2 years ago when I mentioned nasty, sexual foul language (similar to Trump's) in Spanish in their Investment Banking, Latin America Dept. to 2 FEMALE supervisors. The following workday, I was escorted out of the bank. Their official excuse was 'failure to follow procedure'.
I returned to Key Food and asked to speak to their manager. A SE Asian woman emerged from a booth, I told her about the incident and then she walked away, presumably to talk to him. I returned yet again the following week, and this time an Asian man claimed he didn't know the full story and that the other manager had said I would return. She had NOT asked me to return; I was following up on my own. I recounted everything yet again, and he also left in search of the employee. When I followed up for the 3rd time, the male manager informed me that a 34-year-old Mexican had been suspended for a week. However, he contested that he wouldn't have jeopardized his job by doing such a thing.
Then why was he suspended? His behavior alone warranted some disciplinary action. He never even looked at me, his swagger and disdainful body language spoke volumes, culminating in a nasty comment that he had never expected a blonde, green-eyed Brazilian to understand. It's also obvious that--without my intervention--he would have continued disrespecting people.
At Trader Joe's, all employees are trained to greet, smile and make eye-contact with customers. This food purveyor would do well to emulate it. And, needless to say, they have...
