Mikado is very striking from the street. I wish they'd spend as much energy on the food as they did on the decor.
I was telling my boyfriend that the menu seemed a little strange compared to other Japanese restaurants in the area and a woman at the next table chimed in, "yes, it's a little weird but the food is delicious”.
I guess it's a case of to each his own. We had the $79 set menu that we shared and added a couple of appetizers. I thought the portions on the $79 menu were a bit stingy even though it's only for one person. I did notice that the table next to us both had the $32 bento box and that looked less than generous as well.
The karaage Fried Chicken was so basic. Nothing Interesting to say about it. Fried Chicken nuggets. The shredded chili peppers on top were tasteless. Apparently, the sauce had truffle in it. I didn't taste it.
We had the crispy rice. It's probably the worst version of this dish I've ever had. The chunk of crispy rice is supposed to be crispy and this was chewy and hard to eat.
From the set menu the oyster with yuzu phone was just odd. Sweet Yuzu foam on an oyster. Meh.
The Cold buckwheat noodles were adequate. I'm assuming that the dinner portion of this is much bigger than what you get on the set menu.
The only good dish was the tuna tart. The nori cracker on the bottom was nice and crisp. The spicy tuna was good
There was a cucumber salad that had the same sesame dressing as the cold noodles.
There was madish fish sashimi came with a ponzu jelly that was indistinct.
We had a maki roll instead of the hand roll from and ordered one. They were a unusual size since they cut the roll into four pieces. More than one bite and weirdly chewy..
It also came with eight pieces of sushi that were fine. One of them had two tiny firefly squid on top. I'd never seen that before. I will give points for that.
They serve sad red bean ice cream as dessert. It didn't even taste like red bean. It was more like vanilla that someone threw some red beans in as an afterthought.
The service was a bit uneven. The place was pretty quiet and I had to wave people down to clear the dishes.
Maybe it's a good addition for Brooklyn Heights, but Ki sushi on Smith Street...
Read moreLast night's dining experience fell far short of our expectations, resembling a Seinfeld episode more than a pleasant evening out. Despite having made a reservation for 7 pm (a decision made somewhat lightheartedly after all available slots were open online), our arrival revealed a packed restaurant with no available table for us. The delay in seating us extended until 7:40 pm, leaving us contemplating whether to leave or endure the chilly Saturday night without a clear alternative.
Once seated, the lack of attention was conspicuous, with nearly ten minutes passing before we saw our server. Although apologetic, the server appeared scattered. To add to the frustration, a neighboring group of girls arrived, had their orders taken, received their food, paid, and departed before our meal was served. While it felt almost personal, I recognize it likely wasn't.
Despite the promising quality of the food, featuring excellent sushi and good miso soup at a reasonable price, the overall experience was marred by the excessive wait. What should have been a swift dining affair turned into an almost three-hour ordeal. The issue persisted as we had to wait for our check, prompting me to approach someone personally, highlighting the lack of attention during the entire meal.
This disappointing experience was particularly disheartening as we had high hopes for the limited local sushi options available. The chaotic atmosphere left us questioning a potential return. While the thought of enduring such prolonged waits for food again is disheartening, the quality of the sushi may warrant a second chance. Our negative encounter has been widely shared within our building, and we regret not being able to offer a more positive review to generate additional support for the restaurant, which seemingly has no shortage of reservations.
In offering constructive advice, it is suggested that the establishment consider hiring new staff and ensuring they are adequately prepared for a busy service. If aiming for good food, adequate staffing and preparation are vital elements. Overall, a disappointing...
Read moreWe had such a great time at Mikado! I was worried about going with young kids who are picky eaters (9 and 7) The food looked and tasted amazing, the vibe was relaxed and welcoming, and everyone was super friendly. It’s also really kid-friendly — our kids can be tough to please, but they were obsessed. The server even gave them kid chopsticks, which they thought was the coolest thing ever.
The food was awesome all around:
•Yakitori– tender with a really good sauce. You could tell it was fresh.
•Teriyaki chicken– soft, flavorful, and the rice was perfect.
•Gyoza – veggie dumplings with great texture.
•Maki rolls– California and shrimp tempura rolls were both hits. We also tried the salmon avocado and cucumber avocado!
•Yuzu dessert– light, fluffy, and just the right hint of lemon and blueberry. I was really impressed with the flavor and texture and wished the slice was a bit bigger it was so good. We don’t usually eat dessert so that’s saying something.
•Matcha pudding- not our thing, but if you’re into matcha, and not so sweet dessert you’ll love it.
We’d 100% come back. The kids were already telling our waitress that next time we’re in NYC, this is the first place we’re going. Couldn’t have asked for a better dinner...
