It did once have a mill but what most people will find astounding is that the explosives for the largest single detonation prior to the atomic bomb were created here by the US Army to blow up nearby Flood Rock in Hell Gate, which had wrecked many a ship over the centuries. Some 300,000 pounds of explosives blew up the hazard to navigation and it is said that it was heard/felt as far away as Princeton, NJ.
