Small grocer with a decent food selection. Truly a place for a quick bite, both for on the go and small chats at a table with a friend. My companion and I ordered the Spicy tuna mayo onigiri, the tempura shrimp roll, the California roll, the karage chicken onigiri, and the limited edition roasted pork onigiri. These were eaten with and without the soy sauce to really give it a fair taste test. The Roasted pork had a good flavor. The pork itself had a good spring to it, not dry, and an enjoyable smokiness too it. However, it was light on filling compared to the other items we've ordered; going back to order a second pork filled onigiri to ensure of the filling ratio And not just having "a fluke rice ball". The spicy tuna roll is canned tuna, but not a bad canned tuna. Little to no chunks, nice and smooth filling with a light spicy, most likely due to siriacha being the spice of choice. The shrimp tempura roll was served cold along with the California roll. My best assumption is that the rolls are kept cold and the onigiri are kept hot, but I'd have to try it again to make sure of it. Both tasted as expected; but the tempura roll tasted like a homemade tempura shrimp, not frozen. Points for that. The cold rolls were less sticky than the onigiri; you cam hold them without the plastic wrapping. The rice itself tasted lightly seasoned; probably just a light salting which I enjoy. The employee was friendly, and there is light music, so you can speak with your companion without competing with the volume Overall, a very good experience. 4 stars only because I came primarily for the food and not the grocery, and I've had better onigiri elsewhere, but these are very good. Onigiri Tanakaya started as a pop-up and now they've opened their first, permanent location in Gramercy. I'm happy to witness their success!

They sell onigiri and sashimi style hand rolls (priced around $5 each), along with some Japanese grocery items, snacks and drinks. The onigiri and the hand rolls are made everyday and by hand, which is a plus.

During my visit, I tried the California Hand Roll (Imitation Crab, Cucumber and Avocado) and the Spicy Tuna Onigiri. I’ve been here twice already on my way to work just a couple of blocks up. Love love love the rolls and the onigiri. Super fresh and delicious yet light and comforting. I love the atmosphere and the design; the lady that took care of me was super attentive and friendly. Love her! I want to go back on my day off when I’m not on a rush to browse and see everything that they have.
