I have been wanting an 8 ball rug for forever, and I finally got the chance to make my own version at Rugged Looks in Brooklyn, thanks to S’more’s Tried and True Lottery!
Before you buy: Price: According to S’more’s Tried and True listing, the class I took was $175, although I got to do this experience for free through the lottery system.
The Class: The class is 2 hours. Your teacher walks you through the basics of rug tufting and provides you with all the materials you need—Sarah Grace, our teacher, even drew our designs for us. We started practicing our by tufting our name, then we just tried to color within the lines with a rug tufting gun. SG helped us through the entire process giving us pointers and one on one feedback. They return our rugs in two weeks after they put the professional, finishing touched on it!
Atmosphere: Rugged Looks felt very vintage with the yellow and orange swirls and music—songs like Valerie by Amy Winehouse. Intimate space with a snack station including coffee, chips, and candies!
Rating: 10/10 absolutely amazing class that sparked a new hobby for me—look out for my rug...

Chill, fun vibes overall: Idris started the class off with tufting basics, and then we were free to tuft and make mistakes where Idris would gently guide and help course correct. Your submitted design will already be pre-drawn by the instructor so that you're just filling in the yarn like coloring. Note that you'd have to pick up the rug a couple of weeks later (or pay for shipping) since it still needs to be glued to a backing, cured, and shaved etc. which is handled by the staff. and there was a doggie named Theo who made the experience even more homey, if you don't have dog allergies! 100% will do this again when...
Read moreThis was an extremely fun arts and crafts activity. I mean making your own rug with a design that you can choose? That’s pretty awesome. It’s something different from painting or pottery class. It’s a cute space and she has a bunch of different colored yarn.
The instructor taught us how to use the pile rug gun, from threading and tufting into the canvas. In addition, we were able to practice the technique. One can take breaks in between (tufting requires some arm muscle strength), admire the process, and how the art/rug is coming together. In the end, they will help glue and set the rug and then the rugs are ready to be taken home J Great idea for date nights, group or work outings, family night, bachelorette bachelor or...
