As a dancer and choreographer, with a penchant for uncovering the extraordinary in the ordinary, my recent visit to the Bone Museum, left me captivated and profoundly moved. Nestled amidst the vibrant urban landscape and graffiti walls of Bushwick Collective, this unique museum offers an enthralling experience that seamlessly blends the realms of art, history, anatomy and science. With its remarkable collection of bones, industrial design aesthetic, and unwavering commitment to historical accuracy, this hidden gem stands as a testament to human existence and the inherent beauty found within.
The uniqueness of the Bone Museum lies not only in its subject matter but also in its approach to displaying it. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by an atmosphere that effortlessly intertwined the macabre with artistic sensibility. Jon and his approachable, knowledgeable staff are enthusiastic and engaging. The warmly lit corridors, adorned with vintage photographs and antiquarian curiosities, created an ambiance that transported me to a bygone era. It was a sublime marriage of industrial design aesthetics and historical immersion, setting the stage for an unforgettable artistic journey.
The bone collection itself is a marvel to behold. Each artifact, meticulously curated and presented, tells a story of the human experience throughout history. From ancient skeletal remains to more recent specimens, the museum's commitment to historical accuracy is evident in every detail. The bones are displayed in a manner that encourages contemplation and introspection, inviting visitors to reflect on the shared destiny of humanity. The delicate balance between reverence and curiosity is masterfully achieved, allowing for both intellectual exploration and an emotional connection to the past.
What truly sets this museum apart is its ability to inspire creativity and provoke thought. My partner who is a painter and street artist, found herself drawn to the intricate details and subtle nuances of the bones. The subtle variations in texture, the elegant curvature of a ribcage, and the delicate interplay of light and shadow all served as a wellspring of inspiration. The museum's commitment to preserving the authenticity of the bones, while also presenting them in an aesthetically pleasing manner, is a testament to the curators' artistic vision.
In addition to the bone collection, the Bone Museum offers a range of interactive exhibits and educational resources. From workshops on skeletal anatomy to lectures on forensic anthropology, the museum caters to both the casual visitor and the avid scholar. It is a space that fosters curiosity and lifelong learning, making it an invaluable resource for artists seeking to deepen their understanding of the human form.
In conclusion, the Bone Museum in Bushwick, New York is a captivating testament to the artistry and historical significance of the human skeleton. Its unique blend of industrial design aesthetics, historical accuracy, and thought-provoking displays creates an immersive experience that lingers long after one's visit. Whether you are an artist seeking inspiration, a history enthusiast, or simply curious about the intricacies of the human body, this extraordinary museum is a must-visit destination. Prepare to embark on a mesmerizing journey that will leave you with a profound appreciation for the eloquent past that lies...

Hi there, my name is SkeleTim and I've been a fan of bones since before I passed away! Due to inappropriate connections with the Turkish mafia I'm no longer alive but I've still got lots to say!
I love bones, you love bones! The people of America love bones! Come on down to The Bone Museum and look at all these bones! We've got big bones, small bones, cracked bones, smelly bones, sticky bones, dense bones, brittle bones, golden bones, silver bones, salty bones, wet bones, dry bones, hot bones, cold bones, soft bones, hard bones, tall bones, glass bones!
We've got so many bones we're using them to build telephones!
Does that make sense? It don't matter!
While I'm not officially employed by this establishment, I'm still allowed to recommend it to all those cool young folks looking for someplace sweet to go on their weekend. Don't you want to explore this fine little bone emporium! I know I sure do and that's not just because it's filled with my calcium kin.
I went to the bathroom here and some guy paid me twenty dollars to play my ribcage like a xylophone! What do I need money for? Nothing! I just liked the way his tiny little hammer felt on my ribs! You know what else I like? Walking around graveyards late at night with nothing but a jar of Vaseline and a pocket full of nightmares!
When I can't do that, I use my free time to come to The Bone Museum instead! Where am I? Look to the rafters! I'm watching you watch those bones and I'm happy to lend my heart and soul to those who are bored at home!
Let's be honest! You could stay at home this weekend but then you're gonna have to listen to your roommate plow his thick Italian girlfriend in the living room. Do you really want that?
Maybe you're some weird pervert and you actually do want that but I'm just a normal Catholic skeleton with strong roots in faith and purity!
So that's why you should check this...
Read moreI stopped off at the Bone Museum before my flight home this Saturday just gone and I am so, so glad I did.
Although the space itself may seem quite small do not be fooled - you can and will spend so long in here as they’ve included so much! That being said, it isn’t too overwhelming as it is so well laid-out and there are a few benches to sit down on so you can really take your time to take everything in.
You can tell how passionate and knowledgeable the people working here are, not to mention extremely friendly and welcoming. I’m sorry, I’m so bad with remembering names otherwise I’d have mentioned them in this review! It was a privilege to meet you all.
Standard price of admission is $20 (with discounts for students etc), which is an absolute steal for what you get to experience. It was relatively quiet when I visited and was given an introduction to the museum by an extremely knowledgeable member of staff which helped contextualise what I was about to see - they were also on hand to answer questions throughout the visit. I even got to touch some real (non-display) bones!
I highly encourage those able to donate further in the relatively newly-opened museum gift shop. The gift shop itself is small but extremely well-laid out and has some beautifully unique things, ranging from apparel to casts of bones (that unfortunately wouldn’t have fit into my suitcase!). I did however get a Bone Museum keyring which has received many compliments (and questions!) already.
This was a definite highlight of my trip and also very moving - everything is presented extremely ethically and is a vital showcase of medical history. Thank you to all involved - I will definitely return when I’m...
