We had a practically "life-saving" experience at SUNY College of Optometry. My oldest chid, who was in a very competitive boarding high school several states away, had started to complain of all kinds of really bizarre vision problems, as well as headaches. They were just really in serious distress. I had to drive up to their school for hours, and pull them out of school. They had their eyes checked at the E.R., and with an optometrist, and an optometrist-neurologist. I took them to a pediatric neurologist and a cardiologist and an ENT, just for good measure. (The complaints were just all over the place- but the primary complaint was that they could not read books or even their own writing.) Eventually, after a long wait, we got to our appointment at SUNY. In no time, they figured out that my child had Visual Snow Syndrome. It's a rare neurological disorder where the eyes are functioning normally, but the brain is not sending the proper signals to the eyes. If we hadn't seen the doctors at SUNY, we would have just thought our child was a hypochondriac, and they would not have been able to function at school. Now, thanks to vision therapy and special glasses, they are back at school and functioning well. Thank you SUNY! And thank...
Read moreHonestly, was recommended here by my doctor Only because SUNY has an access to different eye contact lenses. I don't have problems how they do eye exams. First Minus: be ready to wait, you never know 15 min or 45 min to wait. Sometimes all together was 2,5 hour. I have a big issue the way they prescribe contact lenses. So fast, breathily , doesn't give a chance to check both eyes together how my eyes feel with new prescription. They just ready to order the trials. BUT for me it's waiting of 2-3 weeks plus order new one ( another 2 weeks) if first one not good. It's so stressful, I almost cried cuz I had to ask 5 times: is it possible to see how it feels with both eyes before even ordering it( result were- no you can't... whyyyy?!?!)Not just one and then the other eye. When your vision -14!!!plus high astigmatism. It doesn't cost 300$ lenses fit fee !All the other doctors I've seen were doing it more accurate with more attention. And they all were make sure I feel comfortable and lenses are not too strong not too weak. Ugh. Because of SUNY way doing it I'm wearing uncomfortable prescription lenses for 2 years. will keep looking for a good doc with a better lensesoptions . Will never come...
Read moreI went to SUNY optometry for a full eye examination. I was seen by a third year intern by the name of Yana. She was thorough and she gave excellent verbal and physical hand cues during the eye exam which sped it along.
Yana’s physical hand cues were particularly helpful as I was in an unfamiliar space, surrounded by random equipment, and being asked to process verbal directions rather quickly—move my eyes in certain directions—thus making it easier for her to properly examine my eyes.
The whole exam, including pupil dilation, took about 3 hours—which the booking receptionist informed me of when I booked, so no surprisses there.
Overall, the exam with Yana and my interactions with the support staff at SUNY optometry were a pleasant experience.
The only exception to this visit was the minor interaction I had with the teaching physician at the end of my visit. The physician seemed to lack patience when I couldn’t quickly follow their verbal only cues (vs. Yana’s verbal + physical hand cues) as quickly as they may be used to. Despite that, I would still...
