The BookMark Shoppe — Local services in New York

In the short time I've lived in Bay Ridge, I've begun to suspect the neighborhood may be something of a book-lover's paradise, what with the Bay Ridge Branch, a collection of well-stocked Little Free Libraries, and a bunch of quiet cafes perfect for getting a few chapters in. That suspicion was absolutely confirmed when I visited The Bookmark Shoppe.

This was everything a great independent bookstore should be. Wide selection of fiction, nonfiction and kids books (including a shelf entirely devoted to books from and about Bay Ridge), super-friendly staff, and a nice little collection of used books for just $1 each. Looks like they're constantly hosting a bunch of cool events as well. I'll definitely be stopping by whenever I'm in the market...

Sigh. I know. It'll be cheaper online.

But you (we!) should go here instead. I skipped Amazon last year and bought books for my nieces' Christmas gifts. Much is said about supporting small business these days. Let's try to be better about doing this. (I know. I KNOW. Amazon. So easy!)

I was again reminded of how very hard working the owner of Bookmark (and her staff) are when I did my shopping. I also appreciated how the employee was able to figure out which book I wanted to buy, after I gave her the most vague explanation ever. That's not why I went to the store, but it's certainly why...

A hidden gem of a wonderful and thoughtfully curated book, yarn and gift shop. The store is cozy and smells amazing from the candles that are available for purchase. A beautiful selection of yarn. I wish I knew how to knit. The children’s selection is well stocked with classics and popular books. The adult section has classic and new best sellers. They can order whatever you need that’s not available.The sales associates are professional, friendly and knowledgeable. This is my favorite shop in the neighborhood.
