New York City is home to over 4,000 nail salons, and this particular establishment has earned a reputation for providing quality nail services—that much I will give them. The work done on my nails has consistently been satisfactory, which is why I’ve gone out of my way, driving from Westchester County and passing countless other salons along the way, to come here.
Unfortunately, my visit on April 18th, 2025, will be my last.
During my appointment, one of the nail technicians began loudly sharing a personal story with two clients, speaking in a tone that could be heard by everyone in the salon. Her story centered around a dark-skinned man with whom she had a negative encounter. At one point, she stated that she told this man he should “find out who his father is” after he made a comment she didn’t like. While she framed the story as a response to perceived racism from him, the delivery and tone felt inappropriate and offensive—especially considering the diverse clientele present, myself included, as a dark-skinned man.
The comment was met with silence. No one laughed. No one spoke. And yet, the technician continued with her story as if this setting was the appropriate space for such a conversation.
I came to this salon expecting professional service and a comfortable environment, not to be made to feel judged or uncomfortable based on my appearance or identity. When I choose to spend my money somewhere, I expect to be treated with respect. This experience made it clear that that expectation would not be met here again.
Despite the quality of the nail work, I cannot continue to support a business where I feel disrespected. There are plenty of salons in New York City, and I will be taking my business to one that values professionalism and...
