I was looking around for a gym nearby that would meet my needs and also at an affordable price. I did shop around visiting other close by gyms/rec centers before choosing to make 24 Hour Fitness my new gym home.
Pros: Location. This gym is conveniently located within the Ka Makana Ali‘i Mall. So after your workout, you can easily grab a bite to eat, go shopping, and even visit a pet store to get some nice treats for your fur baby.
Staff. I can't say I have interacted with all the staff. But from the ones I speak to on a regular basis (Jason, Manager & Abi, Personal Trainer), I can say they are friendly and knowledgeable and very approachable.
Size. From the others gyms I visited, I'd say this is one of the larger ones with lots of workout machines and free weights. There are four separate rooms on the inside. The main area that holds the majority of the gym equipment, the side room that used to be the child care center, another room where group classes are held, and (my favorite room with the strongest AC xD) a smaller side room for personal training with some equipment and weights.
Amenities. This gym includes a lap pool, whirlpool, steam room, sauna, group exercise, personal training, TRX suspension training, olympic training rig, pro shop, personal training, cardio equipment, strength machines, free weights, free WiFi, Open 24 hrs, and towel service.
Price. For all this gym has to offer, you really can't beat the price. They offer different payment plans to meet your needs from no commitment, to monthly, to yearly. I prefer the yearly plan since it's the most discounted rate.
Like any gym, this location has pros, but also some cons.
Accessibility of gym equipment. This is a very popular gym on the west side. And although it does have many workout machines and free weights, some workout machines have only 1 of its kind. So be prepared to wait to use a workout machine if you plan on coming around peak hours.
Cleanliness. I've been going to this gym for about 2 years now. Although I wouldn't call this gym dirty, it definitely has room for improvement. I have experienced times where I came across a cleaning spray bottle/paper towel dispenser that was empty and had to request for a staff to refill it. Also I've noticed dust accumulation around the base of workout equipments and fingerprints covering sections of mirrors within the separates rooms. I will point out though that I have noticed staff has increased their efforts to improve all mentioned above.
Out of Order. it's not uncommon to see at least one workout machine (or sometimes 2) out of order. In saying that, I have also noticed the turn around times to have broken machines repaired has improved greatly.
Feeling hot, hot, hot! Like I said earlier, this is a very popular gym. So it does feel hotter with so many people packed in one area during peak times. I do wish the AC temp would drop lower during busy hours.
Utilize me! The room that was previously a child care center has some workout equipment I'm it, but not much. For the size of this room, it could be utilized better instead of the limited workout equipment/ as needed storage it's being used for. I am hoping in the future this room will be transformed into a mini gym within a gym. Or at least filled with the more popular workout machines that have only 1 available on the floor. OR a mini gym for women only. So women have the choice to workout with greater privacy.
Overall thoughts: Although this gym is not perfect, I still chose it for the amenities, staff, location, and affordability. This place is like a second home to me. I am happy I chose this gym and have recommended it to many of my family members and friends. And if you don't know where to begin, ask for Jason. He will help you get started on your journey to a better,...
Read more24hr Kapolei is a very adequate fitness center. Easy location and adequate parking with its location as part of the shopping center. Foodland 50yds away is a help for pre or post workout food or drinks. Kapolei 24hr has a very nice pool area with good sauna and steam, pool outdoors and whirlpool. Easy access and calming post workout. Members should be encouraged not to wear full gym attire into steam and sauna with shoes etc but that's minor. Bench outside of sauna/steam was recently removed..... that's a major inconvenience though. Gym.... great variety of cardio all types. All equipment in very good repair and clean. Major pluses. Some of the 24 hr on oahu need some serious cleaning upgrades. Dirty as hell. Not kapolei. Credit management. Everyone has equip preferences, Kap has a very good assortment of racks, dumbbells, bars, squat racks, power racks, benches near DB racks, Hammer, lifefitness, and odds and ends to complete the setup. Hawaii as a whole lacks gyms with the most advanced equipment choices but Kapolei 24hr is adequate to get it done for fitness, bodybuilding, or power lifting. Olympic lifting and crossfit training may have issues, but using the Mililani location of 24hr would probably suit the space requirements and equipment differences for those wishing to train in those disciplines. Pearl city is also a great location but often needs additional cleaning in the main weight training and machine location of facility. Otherwise a great facility as well on 2 floors with adequate parking in Pearl highlands shopping center. Overall 24hr fitness is reasonably priced, offers many locations, and members have many options. It is THE obvious choice for fitness on Oahu and the variety of equipment plus locations and hours make it Oahu top dog for training. Oahu has had wider varieties and better gyms in decades past, but that can be said about many US cities. Operating a well outfitted fitness center in an expensive leasing location such as Hawaii is very challenging. But would Oahu offer feasible options WITHOUT 24hr presence? No, not even close. That must always be a question to consider when rating a gym or chain. We know what the alternatives are here, and they are either seriously under outfitted in equipment, overpriced, or not even a serious viable option for athletes seeking a decent training option. What makes 24hr a 5 star rather than 4? Much better facility cleaning by employees, and a more up to date equipment selection from equipment outfitters such as Arsenal etc. Are there 5 star Fitness locations of any type at any price on Oahu, even independently owned? Easy answer. No, nada, nein. Where can 5 star locations be found? In many cities in USA, including a popular Hawaii leisure local, Las Vegss. Many more options there to meet anyone's needs. But I'll stop comparisons there. We all know Hawaii unique in many ways, and in that vein, 24hr fitness hits as many required pts as any gym in modern day does. For specifics on facilities and options, I recommend the 24hr app for specifics on hours and options. Not every location is 24hr 24/7. But hours are adequate for 99% of most requirements. There are adequate photos on line in other reviews. I'm not scrutinizing. For travelers or any residents looking to train seriously, imho, 24hr is a good choice and I have no problem whatsoever recommending it as a first choice in Oahu, beginner to advanced. Get pumping...
Read moreWhat stands out about this gym and helps keep me motivated are 3 people who stand out in particular. Each man is a Star. Each truly cares about people. The depth of compassion, commitment, follow-through, sincerity, kindness, genuine warmth, and professionalism are traits they each possess. The first person I want to express my profound gratitude to is my trainer, Darren Taylor. If you want someone who will make you feel good about yourself, work with you where you are at, has studied and trained and understands the human body from a physical, emotional and spiritual level - he is your man. He serves us through his military service and individually as a personal trainer. I am a 63 year old out of shape woman with physical challenges. Even though my progress has been very slow, he has been my biggest cheer leader. Many of his clients are athletes who want to get to their next level. Darren has a big heart and the capacity to work with any type of person, no matter their age, background, gender, or physical capacity. You deserve to treat yourself to sessions with Darren. It is an investment that will reap innumerable rewards. If Darren does not happen to be available, his girlfriend, Jennifer, is also a trainer. She is a loving and caring spirit, who has gone through her own transformation. She has much to offer.
See David to sign up for membership and/or sessions with Darren Taylor. I can't remember his last name. But he is the only tall Black man who works in membership. He is not your typical sales person. David is a committed family man who treats people with genuine respect. He will help you figure out what is best for you within your budget.
If you need help as a member, see Aina. I don't know his title, but I think he's a Member Services Supervisor. He simply loves people and wants to make sure members are well taken care of.
If it wasn't for these amazing people, I would rate the gym a 3. Corporate really missed the boat, on so many levels. I live in Makakilo and have been looking forward to a 24 Hour Fitness in Kapolei. Much to my dismay, this is not the anchor gym I thought it would be for Oahu. First of all, it's too small. They should have made it 2 stories, with an elevator. There should be a separate large space for the heavy lifters, with more dedicated equipment. The elliptical machines are often all taken and do not match the quality of the ones at Mililani and Kaneohe. It would have been great to have a tennis and/or racquetball court. They could have set up a small restaurant, with a salad bar and healthy smoothies. They didn't work out in advance with the mall ownership adequate handicapped parking. It seems as if the powers that be underestimated and underdelivered to...
