Johnny Destructo's Hero Complex — Local services in Philadelphia

Stopped in to JD’s a couple a years ago to peak into the world of comics for the first time during a low period of the MCU right after getting sucked in to it. We haven’t looked back.

Walked in thinking I’d pick up a Batman and an Ironman and go on my way but I picked up so much more. I had never read a comic book before, and every question I had was answered and provided me with the best guidance to get what I was looking for.

Rae and JD are always filled to the brim with recommendations that are right for you and your expectations/descriptions. Sometimes I’ll just spew out a sentence of adjectives of what I’m looking for, and they’re right there with the answer.

They have SO many trades and single issues to browse, and whatever they don’t have they’re happy to special order. I mostly appreciate that they don’t call you when they arrive, they’ll text (no, I’m not joking, I really love it) They’ve also got shirts, Art prints, magnets, stickers if you’re not in the mood for a book.

I’ll go out of my way not to order from online retailers just so I can go in and get recommendations, browse and find my new favorite thing on the shelf.

Beyond thankful and lucky to have such a kind, knowledgeable and characteristic shop in our area.

Came in from Chicago for the weekend with my husband and MIL; husband grew up in Philly. Our AirBnB was up on Tower in Manyunk and we went to Jake's for dinner our first night....don't worry, I'm getting to Johnny Destructo's, I'm setting the scene. But I knew before I landed that I wanted something with Gritty on it- he's just so.....GRITTY. As we're walking to dinner our first night and we walked past a closed storefront with THE PERFECT GRITTY SHIRT. Gritty's big, dumb, terrifying face and "Bad Things Happen In Philadelphia". Perfection. I knew before I left town I had to have that shirt. Imagine my delight when i went in a couple days later and found out it was designed by Johnny himself, as well as all the other shirts! I was so excited to not only be supporting a small local business, but a local artist as well. Didn't buy all the shirts I wanted- ain't made of money. But I did snag a couple stickers from the register to satisfy my urge. Hope to visit Johnny Destructo's on my next...

This place is simply the best! The only comics store in the general Manayunk area and really the only one you should even consider. The store owner JD is the sweetest, coolest, and most knowledgeable guy! He has a fantastic pop culture collection of comics, figures, and shirts and if he doesn't have what you're looking for he can do a pick-up order for you right to his store. He's also a very talented artist and sells his own shirts and prints! He will do commissions and from the pet portraits and specialty prints I've seen, he would be the perfect go-to artist if you're looking for a unique gift idea! He has recommended so many great writers and comics to me so if you're in Manayunk be sure to stop...
