Drove an hour to have my wife poisoned due to poor management and safe food handling. She has Celiac Disease. and was fed gluten directly.
Their old menu offered Gluten Free Pan Fried artichoke hearts, but the new menu doesn't say they are gluten free any more, our server stated that they still were but not marked. We opted to go with the Edamame Dumplings clearly marked gluten free (See attached photo from a screen grab of their web site) to be safe assuming that since marking something Gluten Free on a menu would in fact be Gluten Free. as we ordered this as an appetizer this was the first thing out along with a cheese board. My wife tried it and immediately knew it couldn't be Gluten Free. She asked our server to double check because there was no way it was safe. The server returned with look of horror on her face and say their was a mistake on the menu and it wasn't gluten free... This wasn't a cross contamination, or they made the wrong item for us... their "Gluten Free" menu Item is 100% not Gluten Free.
it's not just a typo, that you can write off, or discount in any manner. You are literally feeding poison to people who can not eat gluten.
Since we drove an hour to get there, and knew we had to leave immediately before she got sick, and we for sure weren't going to eat other food that might also be wrongfully labeled. As we were getting up to leave the Manager said that she would comp our meal... Oh really? like We expected to pay for the 2 bites of an appetizer and 1 drink? thanks for ruining my wife's next month physically, emotionally, and mentally, we will cover the $5.00 in food you ate, that should cover it!
Aside from the menu error that is such a bad error it is reportable to the FDA, The Cheese board was a few tiny pieces of cheese which was a lot less than it used to be...
We have been going here for several years and have never had a problem until tonight. They changed their menu to appear that they are catering to more people offering vegetarian options and gluten free options, but it seems that they are more in it for the increased profits over the health, safety and well being of their guests.
This is the last time we will be going to this establishment or any others that are...
Read moreWhen we first sat down, the employee who sat us down (Ben) brought us two tiny mugs full of tomato bisque. These mugs are complimentary to all guests. The soup was incredible! It was so good we ordered another bowl for my partner and I to share. We also ordered a Cesar salad, an order of buffalo wings, and a personal sized margarita pizza. The salad was large and extremely tasty. The buffalo wings were also excellent and had a sweet, tangy, and unique flavor. Both the salad and wings were “different” in their flavors, but in a good way. The pizza however was not good, which is ironically what we came there for. We have tried tons of different style of pizza (Chicago, New York, Neapolitan, etc.) and this was nothing like any of those. I was expecting a Neapolitan/wood fire taste since that’s what it looked like in photos, but the taste was not at all like that. The bottom of the pizza reminded me of a bagel and sauce/ tomato flavor was very off. It was watery and too sweet, which is surprising given that the tomato soup they serve is perfection. Looking back, I think it is possible all the pizzas are gluten free and that is part of why it tasted so strange to me. If I return in the future I will probably order a grilled cheese to go with the tomato soup instead.
Despite not liking the pizza much, I still can’t help but give the place five stars based on the service. Our server Marcus was lovely. He was very kind, friendly, and patient. It was also a nice and quiet atmosphere despite all the tables being full. The restaurant also had great outdoor seating. Staff did not wear masks, but they did have a very clear hand sanitizer station when you entered and the restaurant felt very clean. I would love to come back the next time we...
Read moreI’ve been to the Couch Tomato Bistro just 2 times since moving to the area in May 2014. Both experiences have been exceptional! FOOD: Seriously, one of the best pizzas I’ve had in the Philadelphia area, hands down! I’ve lived in Philly my whole life, so I know the importance of a thin crust and a great sauce/cheese ratio, and the Bistro delivers! The pizzas they have on the menu are creative and everything goes so well together. I’ve also had salads here as well, great portions for the price and amazing as well! The food really cannot be beat whether you’re looking for a nice weekend evening out, or a weekday lunch. The wheat and gluten-free options are also a nice touch. ATMOSPHERE/SERVICE: Wait staff is attentive and very personable. Fast service and knowledgeable about the food (which is extremely important). They have specials throughout the week (live music on Wednesday, which is so good) and Sunday nights are BYOB. The dining area is dimly lit, but not too much that your eyes are strained. Overall, since moving to Manayunk, I’ve been to most of the restaurants on Main Street, and Tomato is the only one I have visited more than once, and will definitely be going back as...
