The short story is this... My fiance and I absolutely love Skatells! If you are searching for jewelry than this is definitely the best place to go to. Skatells genuinely cares about you, your jewelry and your budget. They will not try to sell you something that you are not 100% satisfied with and if they don't have what you want in the store than they will make it for you. Everyone that helped us exceeded our expectations and continue to do so with each return visit! On to the long story, my fiance and I began our search for an engagement ring a few years ago. We had gone to a few stores back in our home state with absolutely no success. We had in mind a band with a few rows of diamonds and a center diamond with a halo, but didn't know how to make these things come together in a gorgeous ring. We could not find exactly what we were looking for and each place we had gone to tried to push a different style ring off onto us. These rings that we were not even that interested in were getting quoted to us with a one carat diamond at a ridiculous price. Fast forward 2 years in NC. We began the search yet again. We went to a few "chain stores" such as Jareds, Zales and Kays and were sooo disappointed. Not only did we not find anything we wanted but we encountered yet again salesmen trying to sell us something that we were not interested in and quoting us a price that seemed ridiculous for a one carat diamond (not even including the band it was to be set in). We heard about Diamonds Direct and I thought - this is it, this is where we are going to find my ring". As soon as we entered the store it was a huge let down. The salesmen who helped us expected us to immediately know exactly what we wanted (which we did, they just didn't have it). Yet again she tried to show us numerous different styles with the "maybe you will like this better" mindset. When she realized that we were likely not going to leave there with a ring she just walked off leaving us. After tracking down another sales associate and explaining what we were looking for for the second time, she told us that it could be custom made, however it would be an additional cost for the custom made. She also tried to talk us out of micro pave diamonds (which I was set on) anywhere on the band stating that I would always have several diamonds missing from my ring. So we went home again, disappointed and upset thinking that we wanted a relatively simple ring but maybe it just wasn't possible. Then I had a co worker refer me to Skatells. My fiance and I put off going for several weeks and he honestly didn't want to go because he didn't want to see me get upset again. We were in and out of the store in under 20 minutes and were so satisfied. In that first visit we met Mike and briefly explained the type of band we were looking for. He immediately went to his jewelry case and said "like this?" and pulled out my dream band! We told him that was the band but we were wanting a specific diamond shape and a halo and he simply said that would be no problem. NO PROBLEM! It was incredible. I asked him about his opinion on a micro pave band and that we were told I would constantly have diamonds falling out. His reply made so much sense, he basically said that if your ring is made correctly then you should never have any diamonds missing from it. After that comment I was sold. We made a visit back to pick out our diamond, then met with Laura to design the ring. We picked out the width of the halo, width of the bands, where I wanted diamonds at etc. We got to design everything with their input and now I have a gorgeous ring that I didn't think was going to be possible WITH a diamond that is twice the size as what we were looking at. We were quoted a smaller price at Skatells for almost a 2 carat diamond then what we were quoted for a one carat everywhere else. Skatells has 2 more faithful customers and we can not wait to go back and design my fiances wedding band! Thank...
Read moreShe said YES! It’s only been a week and the fiancé has received over 3 compliments. Don’t know where to began except to say this place is a GEM. There are no negatives with Skatell’s. It’s absolutely incredible. I can’t believe people still go to other diamond stores. One of the best decisions I have ever made in life.
I went to a few other diamond stores and the experience was terrible. One of the miscellaneous diamond stores that I went to before going to skatell’s had the nerve to ask me my budget in front of my now fiancé. Like really?! I was not about that and told the representative that I appreciate it, but we are done here. Clearly, all they care about is the money. So we went to a few others. Then I found out a few of my cousins bought their engagement ring from mike and company. So my fiancé and I went ring shopping and we absolutely fell in love with the customer service and support. We never been ring shopping so keep in mind the questions were flying, the fiancé looked at a million bands, and the conversations were long. Not once did the topic of money come up. Let alone, Mike felt like a friend I have known for a very long time - very supportive, cordial, trustworthy, and loyal. At the very end of our first visit, he wrote down a couple notes for himself and said “have a good day”. Didn’t say anything about “hope you come back”. Mike and company are not in it for the money, they really want to hook you up with the best diamond for your buck. After that day, I was sold and worked with mike for nearly a month and half. There wasn’t a single time when mike was not there for me. Let alone, he is so knowledgeable. It’s like a walking talking diamond encyclopedia. I was looking at an online diamond company and wanted to price match and mike told me, “some companies may tell you one thing and the cert will say something else”. So I started to look even further in these diamond companies and what do I find out, the cert and the specifications are different. That is very deceptive. With mike, you know exactly what you are getting.
The day I finalized the specifications and creation of the engagement ring, there was an accent circle under the diamond I wanted to add. This addition would have been $400+, and guess what mike said “we can do that but I would advice against it because the accent circle will stick out and the wedding band won’t be side to side/against each other”. Other diamond companies see it as “oh, more money.. sure we can do it”. Another big reason why I knew I was making the right decision. The skatell’s family really in the diamond business for all the right reason. I felt like money was their last priority.
Mike, thank you for everything. The fiancé loves her engagement ring! I highly...
Read moreI searched all over Charlotte for the perfect engagement ring. Went to nearly every jewelry store in the city, and have to say Skatells is head and shoulders above the rest in every measure. Firstly the store is family owned and much of the employees are part of the family as well. The majority of them are certified gemologists and while talking to them it is apparent they have a lot of passion for their craft. The majority of other jewelers in the city appear to be hired guns with no certifications and aren't driven by passion for jewelry but for a commision check.
I had actually found a setting at another jeweler that I knew was the ring I wanted to purchase. It was from a particular designer that Skatell's didn't cary b/c the side diamonds the designer used were not high enough quality for Skatell's standards. I showed them the ring, they improved upon the design, tweaking small things about the setting at my instruction and outfitting it with much higher quality side diamonds. They created the much higher quality ring from scratch to fit my fiancés finger at a SUBSTANTIALLY lower cost!
I was under the assumption that diamonds direct would be the place to go for a diamond b/c of their presented distribution channels. I haggled down the diamond I wanted from DD for 2 weeks, then came back to Skatell's looked at the same quality diamond and the sticker price on it was SUBSTANTIALLY lower than DD's haggled down price. I guess they have to pay for all that marketing somehow.
I visited Skatell's about 10 times throughout the whole process, talked with the owner probably 9 of those visits, and every time I left I knew a little more about diamonds and metals. Very informative. Very friendly. Every employee (which seemed to be the same 5 or 6 people every time I went in), including the owner, knew me by name by my second visit. They communicate well, were very flexible (allowing me to come in after they closed a couple times), and are looking to land customers for life.
There was one occasion where the owner recommend I use a less costly metal for the setting after he found out that my fiancé was physically active, and on another occasion he recommended I buy a smaller diamond for the particular setting I was looking at! I can assure you during my 3 month search for a ring not a single other jeweler recommended that I purchase a smaller diamond or a less expensive metal.
This place came to me highly recommended. I am in that stage of life where all my friends are starting to get married, and I can tell you that 4 of my buddies have purchased their engagement rings here within the last 2 years.
I will be going here for any of my Jewelry needs for the rest of my life (barring any...
